Did any of you have an allowance as a kid?

My youngest brother was complaining to my mom today that he wanted a bit more of an allowance and I was sitting there like "man I wish I had even gotten one" because I can't ever remember having one haha. Though had I gotten one I probably would have spent it all on video games and food ;(

I get enough allowance per week to save up and eventually waste on hauls of manga back when I was still in school.

Now I get more money per month for college, but at the same time I live away whenever I start a new term so my money goes away for living expenses, especially for my internet.

I am born in a traditional Indian family and in these types of family giving allowances to children is considered worthless. So naturally I havent got any allowance!
But still if I would have got any allowance I would have straight away ordered a ps or a nintendo 3ds!Cause I want these systems badly!

I never got an allowance when I was younger, but my sister did, and I was always angry about that, haha. She got extra allowance when she got good grades, too. One of the few disadvantages of being the oldest, I guess :p

I got my allowance during my early teenage years, as we are required to eat outside the school.

Well I'm still in high school, but the way things are going: no. Although $100 dollars for my birthday seems to make up for it, so I'm fine with getting zilch.

Ahh lucky! I'd love to have an open campus! My school's not cool enough I guess >.<

From time to time I did. Kind of. It was never a guaranteed thing, more like "oh maybe I'll feel like giving you a few bucks for doing chores this time around." Although it was that way for my siblings as well, so I couldn't really call any sort of unfairness about how it was given out. :P

I do vaguely recall trying to whine about how unfair in general it was to my parents at least once, since "every other kid gets an allowance for at least doing chores" ah ha ha. Oh, if only I could smack my younger self right now.

I got £10 a week when I was 14. I had a friend who then used to work as a paper boy and get £25 a week, and I used to get overtly jealous of his superior income soo much lolol

Yeah, I got £10 a week, so long as I behaved myself (I was a little turd of a child, so it got stopped a lot).

It stopped completely once I hit 16, though I still got money on birthdays and Christmas, still do, actually.

I used to get like €2 a day just to buy food at school, and €10 if I ever went somewhere with friends. If my parents had ever given me allowance I'd probably have saved it and done nothing with it anyway.

That reminds me, I saved up my allowance for a Japanese Pearl, Japanese Diamond and finally a DS, during my second year at middle school. :P Each versions took roughly a month for me to get. XD

Oh, the joys of being an older sibling. I didn't have an allowance. Every once in a while, like some of you have mentioned, my parents would institute a chore system where we'd get paid, but every time without fail it would eventually fall apart. There was this one time where my parents thought up a pretty neat way to try and get us all to run - we each were given an empty progress chart and whenever we reached certain cumulative mile markers, we got some nifty prize. Sometimes there were group prizes, like when we all reached 25 miles we'd go out to a fancy restaurant. That one only lasted 50 miles or so (well, I got to 50 miles).

Now, though, each of my younger sisters gets an allowance. They get more monthly income than I ever had as a child, and still complain about not having enough money. I spent my paltry funds on food and video games, but I have no idea what they buy. Clothes, I guess. And makeup and StarBucks and other essentials.

Wow, I really like that system. I wish my parents did something like that.

I used to for doing chores and stuff, but my allowance sort of stopped in middle school and stuff. I dont really care at this point, but I usually save my money when I get some, so I might have like...3 years worth of allowance saved up. I will probably be working next summer, so I dont care all that much because I dont really spend my money all that often.

Nope. My special needs were pretty bad as a kid, so it was hard for my parents to get me to do anything. :/ Plus, nowadays, I get SSI the first of the month. So, I don't really need an allowance or anything.

I did get things like... for example, if I was good for an entire day, my parents would buy me something I wanted. Either that or... in order for me to get what I wanted, I had to do something for my parents as a compromise.

I never got an allowance. My parents would say I was allowed to live in our house and eat the food they bought so I didn't deserve to get money for doing simple chores around the house or anything.

it was three dollars a week (when my dad remembered) so not really lol. the only money i got as a kid was birthday money or from doing chores for my grandparents.

I don't think my parents really gave me an allowance in the sense of x amount a week or for doing chores. During high school, however, my parents often would give me some money for lunch and usually on my birthday.

Um no, we didn't get an allowance because we were told that being able to live in the house was allowance enough and that we had to do chores to pay our parents. lol Like thanks. But apparently when I had moved in with my grandfather for two years, my mom started giving my sister an allowance because she naturally had to pick up all of my chores. wtf mom.

I was getting an allowance for a little while, but it stopped when I got older and I'm not really sure why.

I never really got a steady allowance. Instead, my parents would pay us for any extra chores we did that weren't a part of the regular schedule. I remember breaking one of my friend's longboards, and those thing are expensive, so I ended up raking the pineneedles that fell in our lawn for a week. That might not seem so bad, but our lawn is at least once acre big and surrounded by pine trees. That money combined with the amount I already had was enough to buy a new board. I learned the value of money really quickly, haha.

Once we got older, however, my parents started paying us for mowing the lawn. I can't tell if it was because we were older, or the fact that my dad tripled the lawn size. I was always on the riding lawn mower, and the job used to take an hour. That's when my dad expanded the lawn, and the time got bumped up to four hours. I got paid twenty bucks a week for that, so I was happy.
