Suggestion: Dislike Button and Notification on Tab

How about adding a dislike button? I think it'd be easier for people to disagree with something just like leaving a like is easy for those who just want to agree with a post.

And also, I was thinking about a notification showing up on the web browser's tab. Y'know how on Facebook and Tumblr when you get a notification, the tab shows a "(1) Facebook" or a "(1) Tumblr"? It would be more convenient in case someone replies to our thread and we close the tab without refreshing the page and it goes unnoticed for hours.

Why do you think we need to have a quick way to tell someone that you don't like their post? It's fine to just like someone's post so you don't need to say "I agree with this." or whatever but "I disagree with this." without any comments is never helpful to anybody and I don't like the idea of facilitating that.

I like the notification idea! Though don't know how possible it is, depends on the plugin they use... i think it would make the site load slower too, it's been a while since I was told how you can make something like that happen.

But yeah, I can see the dislike button getting abused or complained about like giving negative reputation was. The best way to let someone know you disagree is to too them yourself! They might not like it, but at least you get your opinion across ;P

While this could be a respectable idea, if it was made then i'm sure there would be complaints when someone would get a dislike on their post and it could cause a lot of controversy.

A dislike button makes it very easy to feel bad about yourself if you get hundreds of dislikes, and it makes it very easy to also make someone else feel bad about themselves.

I've always seen PC as a friendlier place on the internet where, within reason, you're free to express yourself whatever your opinion. A dislike button discourages having a 'bad' or unpopular opinion about something, and in turn about fully or properly expressing yourself. I have to disagree with one being added, fervently.

The notification idea is good, but like people have already mentioned I think the dislike would be to negative.

I like the notification idea. But don't we have to refresh the page in order to see that we got a notification? Because Facebook instantly shows that we have a notification without having the need to refresh the page, but not on PC.

For the same reason we give users the opportunity a quick way to tell someone that they like their post!

That said I feel a dislike button gives off the wrong vibe. I know life isn't all about sunshine and rainbows, but because we're called PokéCommunity we do our best to avoid driving a wedge between members. A dislike button leaves us at too much of a risk for nonsensical squabbles like we had when people had the ability to give negative "reputation" back in the day.

at the same time, what if someone gets hundreds of likes on their posts? that kind of exclusivity to everyone that did NOT get the same likes makes the scenario very similar, so I discourage the use of that argument.

A dislike button is hardly a form of criticism, and more a slap to the face after someone makes a harmless opinion. After which the perpetrator walks away without an explanation as to why.

If you disagree with someone simply say that you disagree with them, and explain why. Hitting a dislike button will only make someone confused, discomforted, and possibly even hurt. Positive emotions are a rarity, and having negative reactions to such a thing hardly makes anyone irrational or irresponsible. It simply means they are having a perfectly natural human reaction to something negative given without a reasonable explanation.

Only trolls derive pleasure from dislike buttons.

People have their reasons for disliking posts and not giving an explanation to the person, just like how you can like a person's post and not give an explanation as to why you liked it. That being said, I realise the fault of dislike buttons, but their fault stems from members being unable to take the fact that someone doesn't agree with them and doesn't have to explain why. Though, that all being said, people here are rather vocal about their thoughts and opinions and will most likely have an accompanying post to the dislike.

I doubt most people here will use them for pleasure, but ok.

I'm not advocating for dislike buttons (I can attest to Gavin's recounting of the negrep days), but if they ever were to come around I certainly wouldn't be opposed.

There's no such thing as a "community maturity level", you can't actually gague such a thing. There's only a Boolean value of "will this cause us a lot of problems?" And the answer we got from having the ability to give negative rep was: holy fucking mother of Christ yes.

Eh, a valid point. And in light of that, I'll abandon that part of my argument. But, I still stand strong by my second point. And, in fact, you saying that actually perpetuates it!
Dislike buttons are not conducive to a positive experience. If there had been the option of simply disliking my post, and you had opted as such, then I would have missed out on the opportunity of introspection. In this case, there was personal growth, and a complete lack of animosity or misdirected irritation.

All I can say is I doubt a dislike button will come around since there was the whole issue with negative rep. Even if its not true, if someone gets a lot of dislikes they'll probably feel like "Oh everyone is ganging up on me!" or "This person is disliking all my posts just because they don't like me/one thing I said/whatever." While I can see how its reasonable to have one based off of having a like button, but it just has too great of a chance to create a negative experience for someone in contrast to NOT receiving a like. I mean I guess if you saw that everyone else in the entire thread had a like on their post you'd probably feel bummed out, but how often does that happen? Rather, when you get a like, it makes you feel good. Like you did something right. But you don't feel like you did something wrong when you have gotten nothing at all.

So I think that we've established that a dislike button isn't happening anytime soon.....

Guess the only thing to do now is wait and see what else Hiroshi (or anyone else) has to say about the tab notifications thing.

He did say that they could add a number to the tab title, but also that dynamic/instant notifications won't be around for at least a short while due to current limitations. So I don't know how useful it would be in that regard to load a page and then have like (4) in the tab title since the idea behind it(I think) was that if you say, were in a different tab or hadn't reloaded the page before exiting that you'd be aware of the notification.
