Do you think the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii era was the last good era?

See a lot of people say this was the last good era of gaming to them. I honestly loved all three back then, but def played my 360 and Wii a ton more. What do you all think? Did you prefer Wii, 360, or the PS3 during that era? I played Wii Sports a ton on Wii and my 360 I had games like Saints Row 1 and 2 alongside GTA 4. Oh, and Fable 2 and 3. I owned other games but forget.

Here is the thing that is almost forgotten when it comes to the last good era of anything and it all depends on which generation you talk to. Some people say the PS2, Xbox , Gamecube was the best era, while others may think its the newer generation, or older. I always try to support all arguments by stating that each generation or era will always have something that would be so iconic that it would be time defining.

Each era has their own defining memorables, the first introduction to 3D graphics. Open world exploration. introduction to multiplayer and cross console playing, AI in programming and NPCS, Cinematic story telling. As someone who is an "older" gamer. Seeing the evolution of gaming from the 90s until now. My goodness. There has been leaps and bounds.

But do I think that generation ____ is the last good era? No. As I said, each seem to be renowned for something revolutionary. I see these eras more like chapters in the world of gaming =)

I'm curious if you know of any examples or reasons people gave for saying this, because it's an interesting thought to me and I wanna hear more if possible!

I never owned a 360 or PS3 during this time and honestly if there's one thing I associate with those systems it's the huge boom in shooters and it's hard to think of anything else when I think of those consoles. From my limited knowledge, those consoles just seem like a blurry haze consisting of only games like Call of Duty or Battlefield or Gears of War. But just the things Nintendo were doing were really cool to me. I love the idea that they made things like the Wii and the DS to appeal to the general public instead of just hardcore gamers, and there were great games to come out of both systems regardless of their more casual-friendly approach. I can't remember any game making the internet in general to me feel like how it did when people were talking about games like Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros Brawl. Maybe it's because I was younger and just really starting to get into video games but I remember being excited for a lot of stuff I'd hear about or see commercials on.

Though I can't say that it was the last good era for gaming, because I just have positive thoughts on any era. I have great memories with the 3DS because so many people I knew were playing things like Pokemon X and Y or Animal Crossing New Leaf and that made me think "It's a really good time to be a gamer right now". I have great memories with the Switch both because of how exciting it was to launch with Breath of the Wild and the nation-wide phenomenon Animal Crossing New Horizons was. And both of those were things I didn't get to experience during the PS3/360/Wii era.

It maybe bad wording, but some people tend to say it was the golden era or something similar.

Spoiler:

I grew up with the Wii/Wii U. I actually have the most fond memories of the Wii U era.

I don't agree with PS3/360/Wii being the last good era. It's possible many feel that way due to heavy nostalgia and maybe life changing after that era. To say there was nothing good at all after is objectively ignorant.

Honestly, perceptions of what the "last good era" was are going to vary a lot by what genre people play, since different genres tend to hit their own highs and lows at different times. If you're primarily playing non-Nintendo AAA games, then sure, the PS3/360/Wii era was the last good era. But if you play a lot of indie roguelikes, for example, the best era of gaming is the one that's going on right now. Someone who plays mostly boomer shooters (formerly known as Doom clones) would consider the PS3/360/Wii era to be a dark age where their favorite genre was nearly completely dormant, and a JRPG fan might say the PS3/360/Wii era was mediocre and the real golden age was the PS2/GameCube/Xbox era.

The point is, gaming is such a broad, diversified medium that it doesn't really make sense to talk about eras being good or bad for gaming as a whole. Good or bad eras for genres, sure. But there hasn't been any truly bad era across the entire industry since the 1983 crash.

I'm not even sure golden era is the right word since gaming as a hobby has only gotten more and more widespread with subsequent generations. I don't think you can really identify a golden era like that until you see a declining trajectory. So golden era is uncertain.

As for if it was the last good era? Personally, I don't think so at all. The past few years alone have seen some incredible games released and fantastic consoles. I'd say most people making comments like that don't have an objective reason and are viewing things threw nostalgia goggles.

Funny during the era your talking about we never got those consoles. My family always just had n64 and ps2 and so I loved those. I played the current consoles sometimes at friends houses sometimes but was kinda gaming less during that era ( mostly just playing DS/3DS).
The wiiu has some bad rep but it was what actually got me back into console gaming. I loved Splatoon, Hyule Warriors, Breath of the wild. And with the switch it pretty much just built off that.
Also idk if counts but I can also play alot of my favorite ps2(baldurs gate, battlefront,ff12) and n64 titles on the switch and even older ones snes and nes with the switch online.
Single player games like Astral chain, 3 houses, TOTK, Prince of Persia Lost Crown, Elden Ring I think could hold up in any era and the switch Mario Kart and SSB are the best in their franchises imo. Not so mention all the super popular mainstream multipler games like fortnight, rocket league, minecraft, overwatch, etc
So might be recency bias but even counting nostalgia, I think the switch and this gaming era has been the best.
