    losers weepers

If you come across an object that is of value with no clear sign of who it belongs to, do you take it, or do you leave it be? Perhaps you take it to lost and found if it's on school grounds or if wherever you work has a place for lost objects?

I would not take something that didn't belong to me. If there was a clearly designated authority figure then I would entrust them with the item in case somebody came back in search of it. At a school I would take it to the teacher or lost in found, in a store I would probably give it the manager, at work look for a security gaurd.

If it was just in the middle of the street and it looked important like somebody's handbag/ money/ wallet, laptop, eyeglasses, then it would probably warrant a drive to the the police station. If it seemed like something relatively minor like a magazine, candybar or ponytail holder left on a park bench, then I would probably just leave it where it was. Maybe they'll come back, and see it? If they don't though its not going to be as critical to somebody's life as their lost keys, phone, wallet, wedding ring, medication etc--THESE things have to be reunited with their owner if there's a way.

If I have a reasonable chance to return it to somewhere or the like, I will. If not, I'll keep it, simply.

Most valuable thing I found was someone's keys on the train before; handed it to a station guard at the station I got off at.

Usually I just leave it, unless there is a quick and easy way to hand it over to someone who will hold onto it (security guard, lost and found center, etc) or the person themselves. Many times I am going somewhere in somewhat of a hurry and don't have time to track down who an item could be given to. Rarely noticed lost belongings when out and about so far though, but having lived in NYC for most of my life there is so much going on in Manhattan (where I commuted to most of the time for work) that noticing a lost wallet or such among a sea of people could be hard, lol.

If I find money I will definitely keep it though, unless I notice it fell out of someone's pocket or something. If I just see it sitting there, whoopee lucky me.

I mostly leave things alone unless I know who they belong to directly. One exception is anything like a lost wallet or purse which I return asap! (even though I've never found a wallet with money in it. Usually it happens at concerts and events, people drop stuff and others swipe the cash / cards just to leave the wallet/purse behind. I try to mail them back when I can with a letter suggesting they cancel their cards if they haven't already.) Another is if I just find straight cash on the ground. Like, yoink, lmao.

More often than not I'm just re-finding my own stuff that I lost tho.

It depends on what it is. If it's a good pen on the ground for example... I usually pick it up and reuse it. Like others said, if it's something of value like a wallet... I would most likely turn it in to authorities etc. I wouldn't take anything out of the wallet like money and such either. It just depends on what sort of objects we are talking about.

I don't feel comfortable keeping someone else's stuff. If it's money/etc, I'll try to turn it in to the proper authorities; otherwise, I turn it into a lost and found. Depending on the circumstances/location, I might try to post to social media about something being found. E.g. if a phone is located on the street in our neighborhood, I might post about it to our neighborhood's facebook group.

It's never really come up in my life with anything more than quarters, but in complete honesty, if I saw something like a wallet or computer laying around I'd probably just get hit by the bystander effect and leave it alone. :/

(One time I saw a cheap-looking choker laying on the ground at a college campus and I thought about taking it, but I quickly realized "ew, germs". It laid there for like a week before disappearing, presumably swept away with the crowd or picked up by way of cleaning.)

If I find a coin on the street, I collect it. If I find a bottle on the street that is still worth some money, I leave it. I don't want to run around with a bunch of bottles, let alone go to work with them.

Everything else it depends. If it is something that looks personal, then I don't want to get involved in that. If it doesn't, then I'd rather scout the area before making any moves.
