    about this roleplay:

    Welcome to Gilded Halls. It has been almost a year since I ran the original roleplay, and I hope that I have learnt enough from then to make this a success :).

    In order to allow you a bit of freedom, this roleplay will be a sandbox roleplay. Creativity will thrive in this roleplay, to ensure this each period in the day will be represented by a long period irl.

    Your character has been written to, inviting them in to the school. To the public Gilded Halls is just an esteemed boarding school; you will soon see it is much more. It is a school that nurtures real talent, letting students excel in the hidden arts. Your character doesn't necessarily know they have a power yet - maybe they're oblivious, maybe they're in denial, or they could be fully aware of their potential. It's up to you how your character will deal with this invitation (forced, excited, ...bored?).​


    story:

    In July of every year, the prestigious 'Gilded Halls' send our their invitations. The unmistakable gold-rimmed envelopes encourage parents to send their unique children to a secluded area of the United Kingdom.

    However, unknown to the public (and some of the parents), this is no ordinary school. Gilded Halls specialises in training and educating those with exceptional gifts, magical powers and extravagant abilities. Each year they would find numerous candidates from around Europe, scouted out by equally gifted teachers and accomplices.

    On September 1st the pupils will gather - a range of teenagers will enter the school, uncertain of what lies ahead of them. Little do they know that there will be no textbooks here, no essays to complete for homework. This school year will be much, much harder to pass. For 'Gilded Halls' is but an interview phase, for a much bigger project.

    Will your character thrive? Will they unlock their true potential? Will they pass the year?​

    powers and aptitudes:

    It is very important that your character's skills are in keeping with this roleplay, and do not pose a problem in terms of god-modding or bunnying. For example, teleportation is a great ability and power - being able to teleport other people /against their will/ however, is a problem.

    You may pick any ability you would like, and as long as you can balance it. I will stop abilities being duplicated/copied too much, so make sure that yours is unique! I won't be accepting two characters with identical powers.

    Since the characters are all teenagers, their powers should be underdeveloped and rather limited. Age does have a bearing on this, an eighteen year old should be more developed than an eleven year old. Abilities are definitely allowed to grow and change during your time here, but there should be clear limitations to what your character can do at present.

    Examples of good limitation ideas:
    • Inaccurate.
    • Can manipulate <whatever> but not create it.
    • Power only affects a limited range.
    • Only usable for a short period of time.

    Examples of bad boring cliché limitation ideas:
    • Will die/be hurt if power is overused.
    • Can only be used when angry.
    • Can only be used once a day (very limiting in this kind of roleplay).


    the school day:

    The school runs a peculiar timetable, that allows pupils to pick and choose which lesson they attend. The majority of lessons are pupil-led, without a teacher in sight and clear instructions left in the classroom. That means that pupils are free to come and go as they please, completing the task anywhere in the extended gap.

    The length of real-life time for each period will be decided in the OOC as a group - to try and keep everyone happy! Most of the time we will be looking at around two-three weeks.

    Appearance:
    Kevin stands at five-foot-five inches and weighs 140 pounds. Kevin has short almost bordering on what some people would call medium length red hair which is usually styled with some form of hair gel. He ruffles his hair all over to achieve the messy let almost styled look. Other features of Kevin include a slightly more than average built body, he may not be incredibly muscular but he isn't terribly skinny either. He's shape is just ever so slightly larger than the average 15 year old. He also has a notably strong Irish accent.

    Kevin's usual attire consists of a pair of jeans, a black t-shirt with yellow detailing along the sleeves and neck and finally a pair of white sneakers with red details. He can be seen carrying around a small backpack when its class time along with a black jacket whenever the colder weather sets in. When hanging around his dorm room when there's no class or during late evening his attire switches to a pair of black tracksuit bottoms along with a plain white t-shirt.

    Full name: Makoto Hatakae
    Age: 17

    Appearance: Makoto stands at about 5'6" and weighs roughly 115 pounds, both which are average for someone his age. He is in no way buff, but can run great distances if he needs to. His skin is peach in color and doesn't burn easily in the sun. Makoto's face almost always has an apathetic expression on it, his green eyes droopy-like and his mouth curled up into a small frown or line. As for hair, Makoto keeps his blue hair somewhat long, as it ends around his chest. He keeps a good portion of it in a ponytail, with left and right bangs and strands of hair on each side sticking out. Makoto has no physical oddities whatsoever (though he is left-handed, if one wants to consider such odd).

    As for attire, Makoto wears kimonos. As he lives and works at the shrine run by his family, this sort of outfit is not unusual. His favorite kimono is a long pink one with a blue ribbon around the area between his chest and stomach. To top off the "shrine" look, Makoto wears regular, brown geta sandals. And, despite their appearance, he can walk around in them just fine, but will take them off if he needs to run (disregarding the fact that he's now barefoot). And rather than carry around the typical shrine staff, Makoto wields a blue, indigo, gray, and white fan with blue floral and purple wave patterns on it. Finally, Makoto wears a dull golden necklace with a six-pointed star shape carved into the pendant and a sapphire in the middle of said star.

    History: Makoto used to be a shrine guardian in charge of the "Coltheart's Shrine" near the outskirts of Japan, named for some ancestor Makoto couldn't care less about. His parents wanted a girl, but had him instead. But they didn't mind, so long as Makoto performed his duties. Makoto grew up learning how to clear his mind of everything and how to repel evil spirits and...well, anything a typical shrine maiden has to learn. He was allowed no TV, no phone, no video games...nothing electronic or "of the outside world" whatsoever. Despite this, his parents didn't seem to mind sending him to a regular public school since he did need an education, even if some of it were "biased", as his parents thought. Over time, Makoto began to procrastinate on his daily duties and homework and instead began sleeping. He used his sleeping as an excuse as to why he didn't work, and while his parents chided him early on, they eventually gave up and let him do whatever. Makoto was content with the life he had and didn't have any plans to change it whatsoever.

    One day however, things started to change. Makoto started to help his dad with his Blacksmith job as well. Makoto helped gathered materials to create the first sword of his dad's business, all to be created by himself. However, when Makoto was finished after a few attempts, there arose a blue-ish light. Makoto couldn't see the workspace he was stationed in, until he realized that he felt the nearby tools and weapons rattling all over the place. When it was over, there was nothing except his desk - his tools, and the sword he created was all gone. Makoto couldn't imagine what happened, until he looked upon his left hand palm. There was a dark circle. Was that all created by.. him?

    Soon he discovered more depths to his powers; he can pull different objects in and between the distortions of space, or in other words, the void. He liked to sometimes tease his family members by hiding objects, and bringing them up again. It was strange but.. he liked it!

    But one day, while watching over the shrine, Makoto fell asleep. During the time he was asleep a burglar broke in and stole what little donations people had given to the shrine. This angered Makoto's parents very much. They weren't concerned that they had lost all the cash the shrine had received, but that their son was so incompetent when it came to protecting the shrine for just a little while. As a result, they wanted to send Makoto to boarding school. Boarding school. The name had "negative" written all over it. Those types of schools always seemed to be very fickle about grades, about dorms, etc. This wasn't the life for Makoto . But there was no other option for him, as his parents' decision was final. They wanted him to learn discipline. Thus, Makoto's parents showed him an invitation that was sent in the mail - a school called Glided Hills, that was rumored to be one of the toughest boarding schools ever. Makoto hadn't heard of tis school before, but.. he had his misgivings. However, he had no choice. It was time for him to be sent there. What happens next? Only fate can decide.


    Ability name: Switchblade

    Explanation: Makoto's powers utilizes the boundaries between space and a cosmic void. More specifically, his weaponry. He has the power of bringing about objects and other things from and between the world, and the abyss, which is where he gradually decided to keep his weaponry. So therefore, he uses his powers to bring out objects from the void. He decided that his favourite things to bring from the void was one of few weapons that he and his dad forged: either his swords, lances, or axes. His weapons are stainless steel, and can't be broken easily in combat.

    Limitations:

    - Unfortunately, Makoto can only bring one weapon (either his swords, lances, or axes) at a time, and after that, he can't use his powers until he returns his current weapon back into the void. Fortunately, there's no limit he can do this.

    - Basically, after he draws a weapon, he has to rely on his own physical strength, and his own experience using his weaponry. His physical isn't the best mind you, and his weapon skills are pretty average at best, but, he'll learn!

    - Opening the void, he can only transport and bring out objects, and not people. In addition, he can only bring objects that he personally put in the void, like his own weapons, ahead of time.

    Age: 16
    Appearance (Reference #1, #2, #3): At above average height for a girl her age, Ginny stands tall at 5'10", generally towering over girls and boys alike. She has straight, shoulder-length red hair that somehow always finds its way in her face, causing her to absent-mindedly remove it at random intervals. Her eyes are a striking light blue which shine when she smiles.

    Developing early, she learned how to brush off boys' attentions and not let them get to her. She usually wears a pair of form-fitting jeans, flip-flops, and a styled t-shirt or tanktop. Her hair can be found in almost any style, be it up in a bun, in a tail, or just down.
    History: Ginny was raised in a middle-class family as the oldest of three girls living in suburbia. She always found herself looking out for her sisters, but also enjoying their company as the three were born in consecutive years. The early years were spent with a well-balanced amount of play and study, allowing the girls to harness the energies of their bodies and their minds.

    On the morning of her twelfth birthday, Ginevra awoke underneath her bed and screamed, not having a clue how she got there. She was never one to sleep walk or anything of the like, but her parents assumed that she had simply done it in her sleep. After this happening every day for two weeks, she tried her best to figure out what was going on. After some investigation, she found that she could pass her hand through her bed and to the other side, and if she really concentrated, she could phase her entire body through the mattresses.

    Part of her wanted to share it with her parents and sisters, but she decided it was best to keep this ability to herself. She spent time alone honing her skill over the years, but found it difficult to find time to practice and be with her family. In the summer after her tenth year of schooling, she received a letter from a prestigious boarding school Gilded Hall, which after much thinking and discussing with her parents, she accepted. She thought that at least there, she could find some time to herself to hone her skills.

    Appearance

    Starting puberty early has had a lot of perks for Andrew. Standing at 6'2" and weighing 170 pounds, he is nowhere near the average for his age. Being a sucker for a good physical fight and an arrogant person, he eventually got into bodybuilding to achieve what he likes to call "the perfect body". He is also really self-conscious so he makes a lot of efforts to always look clean and good. Andy has black hair to which he added streaks of blue and that he keep styled through some gel. (Think of Zayn Malik's haircut). His skin is not too pale nor too dark. His eyes are cat brown and he's always rocking a smirk.

    As far as clothing goes, Andrew is simple. He doesn't like flashy or brilliant colors. Only dark ones such as grey, black or dark blue. Occasionally you might also see him wearing white. But he'll never put on green or a yellow clothes as he thinks they're too flashy. He also likes tight shirts, just to show his muscles and skinny jeans but not to the point that his organs would feel like exploding. Sneakers, preferably black with stripes of red, are what he always go for. As for accessories, he likes wearing a silver watch.

    History

    Andy was originally born in the USA but he moved, at the age of 2 and with his mother, to England, more precisely London to escape his father whom was a alcoholic and whom only pleasures in life were gambling and beating his wife. He didn't give a damn about his son and never tried to get news of them after they ran away. Once they were settled in London, his mother immediately got 2 jobs so she could offer her son the best possible education. This, however, had its consequences. Andy would rarely see his mother. Most of the time, he'd be guarded by a babysitter who was barely 16 during the afternoon and housed at the neighbor's house if his mother had a night shift. Growing up like this, he quickly became envious of every other child that had his parents looking after him. This envy quickly faded into anger when he enter a private school. He found out that all the kids were just whiny little brats that would keep crying until they got everything they wanted. He already knew he wouldn't be able to blend in between these kids so he just kept to himself, always staying alone in a corner. One time, a group of bullies decided to take him for target. They kept annoying him but he'd never attack back. He had learned to bottle up all of his emotions. When he just started high school and after constantly bugging his mother to buy him some training materials, he started bodybuilding and self-teaching some karate by watching countless movies on the genre. Due to having good growth hormones and starting puberty earlier, he had no real troubles achieving to reach a decent size of muscle. Enough to brag out and to intimidate people. That goal reached, his first action was to take revenge upon his middle school bullies. He fought them all, beating them one after another. After this, he started to notice some strange happenings. Things could start floating around him all of the sudden and he could swear he got off the ground by some centimeters once! Thinking this must be his imagination, he paid no attention to these oddities and continued his fighting-filled high school life. That was until a random night when he started floating again. But not by some mere centimeters this time, he was clearly off the ground. That was the night he discovered his power. Apparently he could make things levitate. But there were certain limits seeing as he would often struggle to stay a few seconds in the air. He would practice in secret from everyone, he wouldn't show his power until he was sure that he completely mastered it. Meanwhile, he still continued his usual life. And as a lot would expect, he got permanently expelled after yet another fight. During the days that followed, he got yelled at by his mother every time he'd see her. He wasn't too bothered by being expelled seeing as he despised the school so he spent his "special vacations" working out and practicing his ability. A certain Saturday night however, his mother entered the house ecstatic. She was radiating joy. He soon found out the cause of all that happiness. There was a very prestigious school called Gilded Halls that had sent out an invite to him. He was honestly taken aback and grumpy to see himself back to school so soon. But he didn't make any negative comments to avoid his mother going all furious on him again. Now he was only wondering what awaited him in this school.

    Ability name: Levitation

    Explanation: Basically, this allows him to lift certain objects off the ground and to freely move them around in the air. He can also levitate himself off the ground but he can't reach very far. While floating he can also walk and dash in the air.
    Limitations: • It is difficult for him to stabilize in the air.
    • Can't change directions while dashing.
    • Can't levitate himself higher than 10 meters.
    • Objects to levitate must be no further than 20 meters from him.
    • Can barely lift other humans at the moment.

    Full Name: Rachel Halland

    Age: 16

    Gender: Female

    Appearance: Rachel stands at about 5'6" with a somewhat slender body build. She sports a rather soft, somewhat paler skin complexion, one that is sat off by her enticing, emerald-green eyes and fiery-orange hair. The girl's long and straight hair easily reaches down to the middle of her back, although she more often than not chooses to wear off to the side in a ponytail of sorts. Rachel carries herself with a calm and somewhat shy demeanor. She is one who despite her bright hair and eye color, seems to easily fade into the background among others her own age.

    In terms of clothing, Rachel dresses in a much more conservative style. She dresses in soft colors, often choosing to wear various shades of brown, gray and white. One thing that should be of note is that more often than not Rachel chooses to wear long sleeves. This usually stretches from a wide array to sweaters, jackets, and sweatshirts. She usually offsets these with various denim or plaid skirts, which she then adds a pair of black leggings underneath. Rachel absolutely loves boots, and she is rarely seen wearing any other sort of footwear.

    History: Rachel was born and raised in Concord, New Hampshire in the United State of America. Always a rather shy and backwards sort of girl, she did not have an easy time ever really making friends as a very young child. More often than not, she would spend her time in her own yard, playing with various toys and dolls and constantly sit alone during lunch and breaks while in school. She was an only child to her parents, and at times they did seem to worry about Rachel's shyness affecting her emotional growth... But the girl seemed to be happy despite this fact.

    Rachel's life would take a major change during her second grade year of elementary school. One day while playing in the backyard with some of her toy horses, Rachel happened to notice that she was being watched by another girl her age through a hole in the fence. The girl seemed a bit nervous about how to handle the situation. Part of her wanted to quickly gather up her toys and go hide somewhere... but for some reason, Rachel found herself not feeling quite as shy around the new face. Somehow managing to work up some nerve, Rachel began to wave the girl over... only for her to take off shortly there after.

    At first, Rachel had thought that maybe there was something wrong with her... or maybe that it was just a chance meeting and the two would never see each other again. However, Rachel would quickly be proved wrong at the start of the new school year. Not only was the girl she saw from the previous day joining her class as a new student, but she was also going to be sitting beside Rachel for the entire year as well. Rachel had been a bit nervous at first to begin associating with the new girl. The red haired girl was worried that she might pick on her and call her names... She was amazingly surprised when the new girl turned out to be an extremely, downright energetic girl. It did not take long at all for Rachel to find herself growing comfortable around the new girl, who introduced herself as Ashley. In fact by the end of the lunch period that day, the two had already managed to become fast friends. For the first time ever, Rachel found herself enjoying the constant company of someone she could actually call by that title, and she would not trade this feeling for anything in the world.

    The years went by and the two got along better and better with each passing day, visiting each other, playing in their yards and even making Ashley's new tree house into their hang-out spot. However, around the age of nine, Rachel's entire life would turn upside down. It had all started like a mostly typical day. Ashley had unfortunately been ill, so Rachel was more or less alone that day. Rachel and the rest of her fourth grade class had been playing a game of dodge ball. While Rachel had never really been a very athletic girl, she always seemed to have some fun playing the game, especially when she was put on Ashley's team. In fact, her friend always seemed to go out of her way to make sure that a ball would rarely ever strike Rachel.

    When it had been Rachel's turn to be on the team that was throwing the balls, something unusual happened. She launched the ball straight at a boy who was on the "dodgers" team. Much to Rachel's surprise, it had actually managed to hit the boy... but instead of celebrating, her eyes went wide as he began to scream bloody murder so to speak. Her eyes went wide, noticing that the dodge ball she had thrown was somehow completely frosted over... and cracked in half from where it fell to the blacktop pavement after hitting the boy. While the girl would have probably gotten off with a scolding or something of the sort, there were two key issues wrong with the picture. The first issue, there was not a drop of snow on the ground. The second issue, it was the middle of May.

    Every eye fell upon the girl. The teacher stared in absolute disbelief. The woman quickly made her way towards Rachel, grabbing her arm to escort her to the principal's office for pelting the boy with a ball of ice. However, that never happened. Rather, the teacher screamed in shock and horror as she touched the bare skin of Rachel's arm... The girl's body temperature was absolutely abysmal. Rachel began to panic as more attention was drawn upon her. She curled, pleading and begging that she didn't do anything to the boy or her teacher. However, the more she began to panic the more things got out of hand. A sharp, cold wind began to blow across the playground as Rachel curled up in a ball to try and hide from the gaze of shock and awe everyone looked at her with, as if the arctic blast was trying to protect the girl in some manner. It would be on this day, that Rachel was removed from the elementary school all together.

    The problems for Rachel seemed to escalate from there. For starters, she would spend many of the next years being home schooled... and more or less confined to her house. Rachel did not exactly blame her parents for this. After all the fuss she had somehow managed to cause, the girl began to think that maybe she deserved to be locked away like she was some sort of monster. However, the hardest part of it all was the fact that she could not see the one person who meant the most to her as often as she wanted any more: Ashley.

    At first, Rachel had been completely devastated when her parents forbid her to see Ashley anymore. They tried to explain to her why it was for the best and why it could be dangerous for her friend if Rachel were to suddenly lose control of her new developed powers around her, causing an incident like she had back at her school. Still, no amount of justification could make the situation any better to the red haired girl. It felt as if parts of her heart were literally being ripped from her chest and smashed into pieces right before her eyes. The fact that Rachel's parents did not want Ashley to see their daughter anymore did not deter the girl however, and she climbed through the hole in the fence that the two had managed to keep hidden from their parents so far.

    She found Rachel, scared and worried and asked her friend what was the matter. Rachel jerked at the sound of her voice and told her to stay away from her. Ashley was going to get to the bottom of this, though, and proceeded to get closer, which resulted in Rachel trying to push herself to a stand from the crouch she had been in, only for the ground she was standing on to freeze over, leaving the girl to slip and fall. Before she hit the ground however, Ashley had managed to catch her, almost slipping on the ice herself. The black-haired girl smiled down at her friend, Rachel tearing a little up as Ashley told her that no matter what was happening to her, she'd still be her friend.

    Once Rachel's parents had found out that Ashley knew about their daughter's powers, they told Ashley's parents as well, allowing the two girls to continue seeing each other. While Rachel was being home schooled, Ashley had to continue to go to the regular school, but the girl felt really bad for her friend, being basically unable to leave her house because some people might find her powers worrying. Ashley decided that having the powers of ice at your disposal was extremely cool and continued to try and goad her friend into mischief of all sorts.

    However, Rachel could still not leave her house, which Ashley figured, must have been extremely boring for the girl. So, she did the best thing she could do, and decided to borrow her parents' video camera and basically constantly use it in her daily life to film (Or take pictures with her phone) what was going on in the town and the world around them, sharing what she had seen and found with the red-haired girl, which seemed to cheer her up, much to Ashley's own joy.

    The two continued to grow up into a pair of young ladies, until Rachel received a letter from some kind of fancy boarding school, that her parents had agreed to send her to. This came as another blow to Rachel, who could not stand the thought of finally parting ways with her best friend. She noticed how depressed Ashley became when she informed of the news, which absolutely broke Rachel's heart to see her friend so depressed. The red-haired girl had prepared to discuss with her parents about not going to the school, when suddenly Ashley came to their house with news of her own: she had received an invitation as well! Together, the two would head to the UK to attend the prestigious boarding school.

    Ability Name: Arctic Blast

    Explanation: Rachel's powers revolve around the element of ice. She is able to manipulate the moisture in the air in order to create this ice in the air. She is not limited to just the moisture in the air to control her power, however. Rachel is also able to freeze various liquids such as a puddle or a glass of water very quickly, but she must be close to the liquid that she intends to freeze, perhaps even touching it at times. Also, Rachel has the ability to even manipulate the shape and density of existing ice, making it much more durable and into various shapes and sizes. For example, if the girl was to encounter a patch of ice on the ground, she may have the capability to change its shape to cause maybe a small spike of ice to erupt from it or perhaps a wall once she becomes much, MUCH better with her powers later on.

    Limitations: As one might expect, Rachel has various limitations when it comes to her powers. For one, she cannot always control her powers as well as she might like. In fact, the higher the temperature a location may be, the harder the time Rachel has harnessing the full potential of her powers. Another issue she seems to have is controlling her body temperature. For some reason, her ice powers have caused Rachel's body temperature to decrease to an abnormally low level. In fact, there are times that simply touching the girl's bare skin can cause frost bite, one of the factors on why she insists upon usually wearing long sleeves. Finally, it seems that exceedingly warm temperatures have a negative effect on the girl, making it easy for her to slip into an ill-like state during the warmer months of the year unless she is kept in a cooler room or state. Also when manipulating the shape of existing ice, the more the original shape is altered or changed the more energy used and tiring it is for Rachel.
