Is Rosetta Stone actually effective? i'm just curious, as I thought of possibly ordering it for myself. I need some kind of program to learn Spanish/French, as I need to know them to help my chances into the Peace Corps.

Cool beans, Void, I'll check it out.

I'm pretty good at learning it though just text alone, but audio certainly helps.

If you put your mind to it, then definitely -- it worked for me. According to their official website, Rosetta Stone is what the US Military uses. But like Ardent mentioned, the price is overwhelmingly expensive, so you might want to consider your budget.

No problem. Good luck with your venture.

I'd love to save up to try to get Rosetta Stone, people always rave about it. I'd love to be a lot more fluent than I am in the languages I know now

Fluency is pretty easy to reach, Noire, but it just takes time. You should find somebody who speaks the language very well, if not it being their native language, and ask them to talk to you in it. Not only will you become better at speaking it, but you're apt to make a friend, too!

I own a Swedish-English and a Spanish-English dictionary. The Swedish-English dictionary was around $3 and I just..had to buy it. lol

My mother's friend Kristina had a Spanglish dictionary for learning new words and their meanings when she was around us, dunno if she uses it anymore except maybe around her niece Cida. :s

Speaking of media, I've been really interested in getting into (finally) recording my own vocals to some of my favorite songs. The real challenge for me is finding instrumental versions to add my vocals to… ^^';

Oh~ I've always wanted to do that myself :D The one instrumental song I remember singing is the Latin song 'Lilium' that was used in the anime Elfen Lied; I sang it for my vocals class and got a 90. Though my voice sounds different when recorded versus real life...

Same here. :P

I have yet to actually playback what I recorded last night, mainly because I could never find an instrumental version on the web. I do remember that thing in the DSi Sound app that you could do something to the playback to erase the vocals like 90% of the time so maybe there's a PC tool that can do that with Waveform audio… maybe. <_<

I read an interesting explanation for that once - it said that the smaller a room is, the better a voice sounds, and when you sing to yourself you're basically hearing it in the smallest room ever, your own head. On the other hand you don't hear it inside your head when you listen to a recording so it sounds different, often if not always worse. I don't like that explanation though because it means I suck worse than I think at singing.

Haha wow, kudos! Maybe my ramblings won't be completely incomprehensible to you then 8D

Aside from English, only language I could sort of understand is Spanish. As for speaking, that's just way too difficult for me. xD;; Besides that, I also know a little Hindi; had the chance to learn it back when I was in high school thanks to a couple of my Indian friends, haha.

In high school I had a teacher who made us leave voice mails in Italian as homework so she could see how proficient we were in speaking the language. I remember how much I loathed it, so when I called to leave the message I went and spoke in the most stereotypical Italian accent you can think of (very similar to Super Mario.) The funny thing was that even though she wouldn't have been able to see it, I was adding in the good ol' Italian hand movements/gestures just to get myself in the role haha.

But I digress. Speaking/understanding the language is much harder than just reading or writing it.

I actually love the accent and hand movements.
Every Italian person I've met has been a pretty warm and nice person, though, so that might be part of the reason.

That's one of the many reasons why I want to go to Italy some day. The culture is absolutely beautiful and there are so many awe-striking sites that you can see ranging from the Duomo to the Tower of Pisa to the Colosseum. And based off of the people I've met - like you've said - they are just wonderful, wonderful people.

My parents actually went on a vacation to Italy for a week without my brother and I my senior year. You could probably imagine the rage I felt when I heard they were going without me >.<
