What is Archipelago?
Describes it as a multi-game randomizer tool. Explains it best with an example.

Start by imagining a standard randomizer of Pokemon Red/Blue. Mixes up all the items in a way to be possible to complete the game. Might get the Soul Badge from Brock and Surf from an item ball in Viridian Forest. Takes you to Cinnabar Island, where you challenge Blaine next. Could find the Fly HM and Thunder Badge there, along with a free fly point, to Celadon City. Continues like this until you have all 8 badges for the league.

Now, instead of that, imagine a game of Pokemon Red/Blue AND something completely different, such as Link to the Past. Shuffles all the items from the two games together and spreads them out between them. Results in things like defeating Misty for Link to the Past's Bow and buying a Cut HM in Link to the Past at the bottle merchant for 100 rupees.

Permits multiple people to play a randomized seed together. Could also set it up locally and play all the games completely single-player.

What games are supported by Archipelago?
Lists all the games here: [Link]. Includes Pokemon Red/Blue, Pokemon Emerald, Minecraft, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Terraria, Ocarina of Time, Stardew Valley, and more.

Mentions more games currently in the works, many with playable versions (with some bug potential). Knows of Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green, Mega Man X (and X2 and X3), Open Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, and Earthbound off-hand. Full list: [Google Sheets Link]. Suggests avoiding any in Alpha, unless you have prior experience with that randomizer. (Encourages you to try it on your own time, however.)

Requires you to own the game you wish to play, of course.

How do you set it up?
Finds the official setup guide for version 0.6.1 here: [Link]. Covers setting up Archipelago itself. Follows a second set of instructions for setting up the game you wish to play. (Check the game's page or the Github for the games in development.)

Feel free to ask for help here on how to set it up. Will try to assist as able. Is not well-versed in how to solve many technical hiccups. Thinks of one possible thing: Likely installs it in C:\ProgramData for Windows 10, which is a hidden folder. To see hidden folders, open File Explorer. Hit the View tab up top, then check "Hidden items".

Activity Requirements
Imposes no strict activity requirements for this Archipelago. Please keep in mind that all the games are interwoven, however. Blocks other people from playing when you do not play.

Ought to play your game(s) approximately every 3-4 days, as a rough idea of expectations, assuming you are not stuck. Ideally plays more often than that (even if just a little bit at a time). Realizes that not everyone can play every day or for as long as they would like. May also fall ill or have something come up. Asks that you please communicate in the thread or Discord if you may be away for a bit. Do not feel pressured to provide a reason. Mainly lets everyone know if there may be a delay.

Note that no strict requirements does not mean zero requirements. May need to step in and either release the game or take over the game if someone is inactive too long without prior notice. Will message the player prior to doing so, with approximately 48 hours to respond.

Personally hopes to finish everybody's games in 2-3 weeks. (Burned through the past few larger Archipelago rounds in about a week each.) Suggests playing with increased experience gains, for games that have that option. Cuts a decent amount of grind to set experience at x1.5 or x2 without compromising difficulty. Varies by game, of course. Specifies that this is only a recommendation, not a requirement.

A few other notes
  • Plays this cooperatively. Wins when everyone completes their goal(s) for their game(s). Please only play the game(s) you signed up for, unless the person playing is okay with it.

  • Asynchronous. Do not worry about being coordinating when you need to be online. Sends and receives items from a server you connect to.

  • Offers trackers for some games. Probably tells you on the game's setup page, if there is one. Involves downloading more stuff to do that. Considers a tracker helpful, but not necessary. Recommends using a command like !missing (available in most games without downloading anything) to see what item locations you have not gotten, if you do not use a tracker.

  • Will need a YAML from you. (Explains what a YAML is in the setup guide linked above.) Amounts to a text document with all the settings you want. Cannot attach them directly on the forum. Must attach a .zip folder (or figure out some other way).

  • Limits players to either one game with any number of checks OR any number of games with 500 combined checks or less. Do not worry if you do not know how many checks your game has. Simply provide the YAML. Will tell you how many it has. Also spoilered a list near the bottom of the post with the number of checks in a game with the default YAML settings.

  • Allows !release and !remaining after reaching your goal. Sends out all the items in your game with !release. (Automatically releases upon winning with Slay the Spire and Rogue Legacy, regardless of settings.) Tells you what items are in your game with !remaining. Disabled !collect, which grabs all of the items from your game out of everyone else's.

  • Encourages players to post about their game(s). Talk about what you are doing, items you could use, useful things you found, good or bad parts about your game, or whatever else. Could even just be a sentence or two long. Gives everyone else a better understanding of the games around them. Specifies that this is just a recommendation, not a requirement.

  • Plans to keep sign-ups open until . Will run some test servers before then to iron out any wrinkles. May extend the sign-up deadline if people need more time to set Archipelago and make sure it works. Cannot join once it has started.

______________

Short version for returning players
  • Cooperative.
  • Archipelago version 0.6.1 (same as the April Archipelago).
  • !release and !remaining on goal. Disabled !collect.
  • Restricts you to either one game with any number of checks OR any number of games with a combined check count of 500 or less. Recommends checking out the spoiler near the bottom of the post. Shows the number of checks for the default YAML. Offers to tell you how many checks your game has if you provide a YAML too. Accepts multiple YAMLs for the same game to see how the count changes as well.
  • Loose activity requirements. Try to play about once every 3-4 days, if not more often, assuming you are not blocked. (Same as last time.)
  • Keeps sign-ups open until . Shortened the usual setup time due to this being a smaller Archipelago. Could take longer if someone is having issues. Plans to run test servers periodically during the sign-up period. Will probably not set aside a day just for the test server.
  • Will post a Cheesetracker to help with organization. Remains optional, as before. Set it to not require Discord.

________________

A question for everyone: How do you feel about not allowing !release on goal? Seems more viable in a smaller Archipelago. (Apologies for kind of burying this question. Had to go somewhere.)

Even when on leave I'm not missing short AP. Sign me up.

Metroid Prime
Zelda 1
Maaaybe Super Metroid depending on how I feel later.

I don't have exact counts, but even with absolutely everything shuffled it's still only around 400 max.

Alright, I got my two YAMLs all set up! I generated a game with it and got 476 checks (375 for OW, 101 for RW).

Make sure to use the lastest stable release, not the pre-release APWorld for Rain World
Spoiler: VendilyRW

Make sure to update the APWorld for Outer Wilds, as it fixes some bugs and adds a few more trap types.

[PokeCommunity.com] June 2025 Mini Archipelago (In progress)

Archipelago time again!!
I mentioned last time that I might be unavailable depending on when this was scheduled, but unless there's some major unforeseen shift I should be willing and able to do this with no activity issues, you have good timing.

A question for everyone: How do you feel about not allowing !release on goal? Seems more viable in a smaller Archipelago. (Apologies for kind of burying this question. Had to go somewhere.)

I dropped this in the Archipelago thread on the Discord but my immediate thought was this:
I don't think blocking !release would change much because it's such a small Archipelago this time, but I think it'd be more enjoyable for me to not allow !release, since there's been times I didn't really get to interact with sections of my games and play less just due to wanting to !release on goal for the sake of other people. It'd make FFV a lot more fun to do all my checks manually.

Speaking of which, I'll put in Final Fantasy V and Circle of the Moon, though I'll do other stuff if I run into issues. I assume everything is up to date but if there's an APWorld update for CotM or something just let me know and I'll get on that. Again, thanks for having me and let me know if there's any problems with my stuff!

Thanks for including this by the way!

For clarity, which version is Rain World? Only saw v1.3.1 here.

(Updated to v0.3.17 for Outer Wilds, released yesterday.)

I forgot to answer this, sorry. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other. Do what you'd like.

Decided to toss one up now, given the earlier start date. Will do more later. Released all of Crystal's items, also. Should get something in your game.

Allowed !release on this seed. Currently plans to disable it.

Attached Setsuna's patch files and the spoiler log. Generated none for Rain World or Outer Wilds, for the record.

Everything works good for me! Found it funny that even with the entirety of Crystal released I gained absolutely no extra abilities in FFV to start with.
I also didn't realize CotM got officially added to Archipelago! Meant I had a bit of a scare with my old APWorld but it's a quick fix and caused no problems.

Here's mine: A Short Hike, Link to the Past, Terraria, and a 7-mission Protoss Starcraft 2. All of these should work out to exactly 500 checks.

I've started with all my Keys so LttP logic shouldn't run into the issues we had last time. Starcraft 2 and A Short Hike are both games I've played in AP several times and won't have any problems with; they won't need much testing. Terraria is a first-time AP game for me, I will absolutely need to test it first before we start.

Did you get the beta APWorld and beta mod for Terraria? Kind of needs it. Runs into potential overlapping item ID issues between the default 0.6.1 Terraria APWorld and any unsupported games (which currently stands to be Crystal, Final Fantasy 5, Metroid Prime, Rain World, and Outer Wilds). Fixes that in the beta APWorld + mod for Terraria. Already merged it into Archipelago 0.6.2. Cannot tell you when that releases, however.

Offers you provide a .zip file of the two, if you do not want to go into the Archipelago Terraria Discord thread for it.

I've already downloaded them both. Will the YAML I provided work for Terraria or will I need a new one?

Hm. Generated a game. Seems okay? Reworked how the YAML is set up. Split up which groups of achievements are in into several settings rather than one setting with multiple options. Might be fine, though. Looked at the spoiler log. Excluded grinding and fishing achievements by default.

The YAML's supposed to have Grindy achievements included, but excluding Fishing.

Try these. I think I figured out how to generate a YAML for the new Terraria APworld. I also fixed an issue with SC2 not properly having starting Photon Cannons.

Attached the spoiler log and Link to the Past patch file. Did not bother with the others.

Edit: Technically hit 508 checks, with grindy achievements in. Is not going to be that much of a stickler, though.

This... puts Terraria over the check limit. Apparently, there are new checks in this update that aren't in the supported version. I'll have to work out how to bring it back to the exact 500 total checks I was trying to do.

Try now. I replaced the Terraria with a Clique, expanded the Starcraft to most of LotV, and removed all the Starcraft no-builds. This should make it exactly 500 checks again.

One last YAML update; a minor change to SC2's default speed settings. All it does is save me a button press at the beginning of each mission. I know what it does, so not worth setting up a new test server for.

I seem to be a touch late. Regardless, I looked into running SM again, but after seeing all the psycho hard mode randomization options and not being in the mental place to try and figure out what even half of those mean, I just passed on it this time. So it'll only be Z1 and Prime for me this time. Almost everything in Prime is vanilla this run, with 1 exception. Elevator randomizer. If doing this one option still breaks seed gen into having missile launcher right at the start, then I guess I'll just perma run true vanilla. *shrug*
While I could try finding another short game for this, I don't really feel like troubleshooting setup right now, so these two will do. Also random Triforce locations cause hell with it lol.
