Happy new year!

Rookie numbers. We need more!

She says just after realizing that's almost the amount of posts she's made over 4 years and hasn't posted in this thread in probably months...

Agreed. On my old forum we had a section called 'The Cellars', where we had spam topics- such as Last Post Wins, Is Peach A Citrus?, Lock This Topic, and so forth- which all had the post-count off. I currently have 3040 posts on the forum- if the posts I had made in the Cellars were counted, I'd probably have over 10 or 20 thousand.

Happy New Year, everyone!

And happy Hogmanay for those who celebrate it!

Forum Games is great for interaction, absolutely. It feels like it can go really fast sometimes and can be hard for me to come back in and get a feel for it again if I've been out for a while. I love posting in it but how social I am and how open I am to talking can kinda come in waves and fluctuate, so I just kinda say "Hey I'm popping in again" or something whenever I show up.
It's great having a dedicated section like this with high activity that seems to have a bunch of regular people who are around most of the time, but still be inclusive of whoever wants to come in, whether they're new or old. It's nice seeing the same faces around and keeping up with what they have to say, and it's nice seeing new faces and getting opportunities to talk with them more. This is one of my favourite threads because it just feels like the purest ideal of that. Or, it will be one of my favourites, once we close this one, announce that I'm the winner, and a new one gets made...~

I considered closing this one. But then I looked at my bank account and didn't see what I was expecting to see. So, it stays open! :P

Wonder how many people here still remember the times when both PT and FG had their post counter turned off.

At the same time it's probably not a good idea to turn it off again, especially when we keep stuff like VPP in mind. ^^"

I should definitely get back to VPP ^^

I recently discovered a research program MIT's running called "Future You", essentially the idea is that you answer a few questions and it'll generate an AI chatbot that's supposed to resemble a 60 year old version of yourself. It seemed intriguing, so I gave it a shot, overall it was definitely interesting; but my future self came off as overly saccharine and positive. Apparently my future self basically had everything go absolutely perfectly for them with virtually 0 setbacks, I asked what failures they'd encountered, and the only thing it could come up with was "failing a college class". 43 years and that's it!? I can't fault it for not knowing personal nuances I didn't add to the prompts, but most of its replies were generic "work hard and you'll be successful!" type stuff; it did make me feel slightly better about myself and I think the idea of making people feel closer to their future selves is solid, but the execution was a bit underwhelming.

I can't imagine comfortably seeing a version of me that's supposed to be 60 years older, or a version of me made up by AI, much less both of those combined. Programs like that are entertaining at a glance, and the whole "the only problem i had in my life was failing a college class is really funny, good on you champ, there's just so much they can't account for. If I'm asked "where do you see yourself in 5 years" I'm gonna have no clue how to respond because there's been a good handful of life-changing events I've been through that I'd have never predicted. If even I don't know what the hell's happening in my own life, I don't think someone or some program who knows nothing about me will give anything helpful.
I think part of that is also because I'm already incredibly prideful that what I say and think is all like, human? Like I live very comfortably in the thought that nobody else could try to be me and I feel so strongly about that kind of thing that the things I say couldn't be created by someone else, much less not even human.

This is a totally different topic I realize, but I've never felt good about AI trying to be people or replacements for them. I see a bunch for those ads of like "get an AI girlfriend" and I can't see them as anything but disgusting attempts to prey on people. There was someone who passed away a while ago and I had seen someone close to them say something along the lines of "Don't pretend to be him using AI" and that felt kinda uncanny to me.

According to my limited knowledge, those AI predictions are probabilistic, not deterministic in nature. As our lives are affected by many real-world factors like decisions, luck, unavoidable circumstances, etc. so taking those outcomes as the base might not be suitable, I feel.

Although it is good to go through them, but we all know that how can we get the desired output. The example which is coming to my mind is a link which was shared in this topic where the output determines what Eeveelution matches us based upon the series of input which we provide. After couple of attempts, we got the idea regarding how can we manipulate the outcome to match our preference. Though this example might be considered quite odd, but the idea remains same more or less, which is into my mind. And that idea is getting what our mind likes. Suppose, in some AI model, we obtained the output which is not good or is not desirable, then our brain will force us to go through that again and again until we had got something which we like, at least I do this.

Predictions depend on the quality and diversity of training data. If the data is biased, the predictions will be too. Which is quite expected, to be honest. Even the survey results on which many data are shown are biased, considering that the values represents only a small group, not the entire population.

Quite agreeable I suppose, from my end as well. The language processing in those AI models are in such a way that they always tend to be at our side, with too much biasing towards us. Although they might be able to distinguish between good or bad, but I guess the basic idea remains same, and that is to be too much generous, empathetic, etc. which is not the case in the real-world circumstances. And since all of them are AI models, so their processing solely depends upon whatever we say to them, so the data is curated according to our inputs, and are not created by them, unlike in the case of humans, who process and create the logic based on their individual experiences and knowledge.

But there are also sect of people who tend to use those AI models, especially in the scenario where the people are facing social pressure or troubles to reach out to real-life people, who might not provide them companionship as they intend to have. As a human, we are quite judgemental in deciding whether a given person is good or not to talk or hang out with. And these judgements comes from our expectations and ideals around which our mind is shaped, and that might not be always the case for an opposite person. Then in real-world scenario, there also comes the judgements based on looks. And these judgements are also crippling to many people around the world. So in order to avoid the social pressure and mental health trouble to critical individuals, these AI models are often referred by them. Because these models are very biased towards supporting the users, which might be helpful for the needy.

I agree and feel similarly, ultimately, a computer program can't truly emulate what I'd be like because it's never had any of my experiences; and it can't think for itself either, just predict what the most likely next word is. Speaking with it felt a lot like those uncanny videos of robots that almost look and talk like humans but that aren't quite similar enough to register as the same; some portions would sound about right, but others felt like a completely different person. Outside of that, I'm also not a fan of AI services that try to replace people; in particular the ones that try to replace dead people. It just comes off as so exploitative to me to sell grieving people essentially a fantasy that their loved ones actually aren't dead / can freely talk with them; and I think that sort of thing prevents people from moving on in a healthy way.
