News LGBT health care protections reversed

    I get this is a sensitive topic, since there's a portion of this community that may be impacted by this. But if anyone wants to discuss or even vent a bit, feel free.

    I don't understand the point of doing this really, as all it does is cause harm to a certain group. I guess the reason is that this rollback appeals to a certain group of voters with the upcoming election.
     
    You're right that it's done in part to appeal to certain people during an election year, but it's also that some people are just scum.

    The Trump administration announcing this during this month, on that particular day, was a deliberate decision. It's an obvious middle finger that says "fuck you, we're still working to make sure that LGBTQ discrimination is alive and well".
     
    Fuck Trump. LGBT rights are goddamn human rights, and rolling back healtchare protections to discriminate us is bullshit, and now? Tbh, I'm locking myself in the closet, and never coming out irl until all this bs is over. I don't know why this asshole annoying orange is so dead set against rolling back ALL of Obama's LGBT protections. Trans people are going to die because of this. I know there are doctors who will refuse to treat someone because they're trans, gay, bi and etc. I don't know why the administration didn't veto this. This is a violation of human rights, but I guess he doesn't care. We need to get this stupid orange out of office in November. This is absolute fucking bullshit, and the worst of all the LGBT rololbacks that have happened in the last four years.
     
    There's just so much wrong... who came up with those terrible justifications? Who let this law pass and for what reason? And most importantly why on this day?

    For those who will reply next... I'd like to ask: how much do you think this decision will impact the next elections, practically speaking? Will it be the coup the grace that will lead to Biden's victory, will it be a good move for Trump, or will it be something else entirely? I'm curious to know your opinions as someone who doesn't live in the US... thank you!
     
    If Trump wants to get elected it's not a good move. But if he doesn't want to get elected again this is one of the best moves he could make. The majority of people by now are accepting of the LGBTQ community, so this could possibly ruin any chances he had (that weren't ruined already) of becoming president again. I'm Canadian, though, so I could be a bit biased as someone who has stood by and watched him cause issues.
     
    I got an email from the organization the Human Rights Campaign foundation, a charity that fights to end inequality in the LGBTQ community. They announced in their letter that they are suing Trump for this discriminatory removal of healthcare protections. The Human Rights Campaign has a new litigation wing and this is their first lawsuit. I don't have much faith in the courts, but this could at least buy us some time. If they can get an injunction then it ought to hamstring this administration from enacting this cruel law until perhaps Trump is out of office. I'll be donating to help them fight this.

    June is national LGBTQ Pride Month in the USA, and yesterday (June 12th) marked 4 years since the Pulse shooting, which was a gay nightclub where a gunman killed about 50 people and wounded about another 50. So basically the date was picked to be as big an asshole as possible, undoing a protection for LGBTQ people during a month that's supposed to be a positive thing, and on a day of mourning.

    I wouldn't be optimistic about it having any impact on Trump's re-election chances though. He's done plenty that, in a sane country, would've killed his chances for re-elections already, and even things that arguably should've gotten him removed from office already. How November goes though is honestly up in the air, it could go either way.

    Yeah, I've read about that and yes, I asked that because really, being deliberately... "a prick" is the only reason that comes to mind... it really shows the real motivation of this law, which obviously is none worth pursuing. What you said about him getting away with so much is also true tho, it makes me worried about not just him but so many more people both in the US and out of them...

    I hope people stand up against Trump. As a practical question/suggestion: what *can* be done? I would recommend/suggest that marches are organized and done. And public statements. And the statements and efforts for BLM should be done for LGBTQ+ too.

    Encourage as many people as you possibly can to go out and vote this November. Every vote counts.

    EDIT: I didn't notice your location at first was Ecuador. If you have any friends or contacts in America, then I would still encourage them.

    this is a pretty shocking and terrible thing to see. i'm very thankful i live in a state that, via governor orders, forces insurance companies in the state to cover trans healthcare (hrt, surgeries, etc). however, i'm so worried for those that live in backwards states in the midwest and deep south. it's hard enough getting appropriate trans healthcare there, i can't imagine what this is doing now...

    trump did this not only as a move against lgbt people but also because it saved insurance companies and drug companies millions of dollars. as if they needed any more fucking money. absolutely disgusting.
     
    Well this is a positive new development. The Supreme Court has ruled that LGBTQ rights are federally protected under the civil rights act. Nobody has to endure discrimination in the workplace in the United States anymore. I don't think with this ruling that Trump is going to be able to take away the healthcare protections of anyone no matter how much he might want to, even with a conservative majority court. Trump's own appointed justice Neil Gorsuch even turned on him, and wrote a strong opinion, "An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids,"

    I'm glad the court got that one right at least.
