They've been doing them less and less, but it's not completely discontinued.
Gen 8 has a whopping 1 (1!) whole mon with gender differences xD
Supposedly Basculegion has it too, but there's no pic for it yet in Bulbapedia's list lol

Eh.... it's kind of funny as a nod to how different in size Pumpkins can be imo... but I doesn't really add anything imo lol
Kind of like how the Unown forms are more of a collectible rather than anything useful xD

Edit: okay, uh apparently their sizes affect their stats:

Different sizes have different base stats. For Pumpkaboo, with each increase in size, its base HP stat increases by 5 points while its base Speed stat decreases by 5 points. For Gourgeist, with each increase in size, its base HP stat increases by 10 points and its base Attack stat increases by 5 points while its base Speed stat decreases by 15 points. Consequently, the base stat total of a Pumpkaboo or Gourgeist does not vary with size.

Guess I learned something today, thought it was just cosmetic @_@
