[Event] The PokeCommunity Game-Along V: The Gaming Strikes Back

I finished Axiom Verge. I honestly liked it a lot better the second time through. Not even sure what it was about it that didn't hit as strongly the first time, but it makes for a really decent Metroidvania game. Though I do feel like it's more enjoyable going in knowing what to expect and using an item map. Movement isn't as clean as I'd like it to be for a game like that, so minimizing excessive backtracking really helps.

I'm done with Super Mario Land 2. It's really a unique Mario game. Felt a little bit like a knock-off of the real Mario games. It was okay. I don't really see a point in playing this one over other Mario platformers tho. You can read my whole thoughts in my journal.

July - Stress Relief

It's a busy part of the year and we've all got a lot on our minds. Sometimes you just need to settle down, get comfortable and enjoy a nice cozy time punching digital guys in their digital faces. Which is exactly what we're going to be doing this month.

The theme for July is fighting games. Specifically, this means arcade-style fighters and things in that general ballpark. Everything from Tekken to Street Fighter to Smash Brothers. So long as it has a story mode with a clear ending and fits that general description, it should count.

I played like 5 fighting games in total in my whole life - Tekken 2 and 3, Soul Blade, Super Smash Bros. and one Naruto game. Yeah, not really my cup of tea.

I'm completely lost at what to play. Quick Google search didn't help me find anything interesting and Steam has a lot of bloat in this section. So let's just say Soul Blade. From what I remember, the story mode takes few minutes to beat as each character. I'll also probably unlock some secret characters and beat the story mode with them.

Oh dear, I also never touch this genre and bundle that with my attempt to only play new-to-me games for these challenges... well.

I looked up a list of fighting games and apparently the earliest Sailor Moon video games were, for whatever reason, 2D fighters?? I'm gonna do a little research into which ones play the best and feature a story mode and that will probably be my game of choice lmao.

Yeeeaaahhh... Also one of my least favorite genres of games lol... I have no idea what I'd even pick here or what I'd play it on... >.> More research is required...

Fighting games are very much the opposite of stress relief for me haha. The games that I normally play to relieve stress are the more slow-paced type of games with simpler combat, like JRPGs.

But since I've played Smash Bros Brawl enough for Smash Bros games to not be that stressful, I'll go back and play an earlier Smash game to kinda sorta fit the theme. The original Super Smash Bros for the N64 should be easy to 100% in a month since it only has a dozen characters and one single-player campaign, and it includes Pikachu which is my main from Brawl.

Honestly, I don't think I have a single game for this I'm interested in playing. Between July being a busy month for me and just not really enjoying fighting games in general, I don't really think I have a pick for this month.

Okay, this might sound like an odd question, but I'm totally new to the series. Would Mega Man 1 count for this? From what I can tell it's at least adjacent to classic fighting style games.

And Smash Bros 64 is done. I've beaten 1P mode, cleared Target Smash, and cleared Board the Platforms as all twelve characters, plus I unlocked the only hidden stage and Item Swap, the latter by repeatedly 1HKOing a minimum-difficulty Jigglypuff on 200% damage settings to quickly get the 100 matches. I did almost all of this on Very Easy, to get it over with quicker, but I did do Donkey Kong's 1P run on normal to unlock Ness. (And tried with Pikachu, but couldn't do it with only three stock. I picked DK because grabs work really well against several 1P matchups.)

My main, Pikachu, is missing its side-B like all the other fighters in this game, and the smash attacks are more difficult to do because of the control differences. If I play Smash 64 more in the future, I think I'll switch to maining Captain Falcon. Pikachu is still pretty fun to play in this though, and has much better grabs than it did in Brawl. The characters I had the hardest time with were Yoshi and Jigglypuff.

Beat the adventure mode in Smash Ultimate on Normal. Cruised through the beginning on the wings of spirits from the last playthrough. Settled on Link, as one of the earlier characters and a sword-user (because of the +sword power spirit meant for Ike/Marth/Lucina). Used a smattering of Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Ridley. Locked most newer characters deeper in the story, unfortunately.

Completed ~60% of all the battles, which was around 350. Forgot how long that was. Grabbed nearby fighters and chests. Skipped unnecessary fights as able. Took about 8 hours, 30 minutes in all.

Snapped a great screenshot, also. Slowed down because of winning the stamina battle. Created a pretty big window to think to screenshot.

It looks more like a platformer to me.

Fair enough. Then what would you consider 'beating' a Smash Bros. game? Because depending on the requirements, I'll do Melee for the month.

Get to the end of the story mode. I think for melee that means beating Master Hand?

I finished The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood with team main character? And team millatary. I'm pretty sure they have thier official names, but i'm too lazy to find it. I feel like i get better after i beat the first boss. I never had fun with a fighting game before. Enjoying it and wanting to play of the game more feel strange.
