[Event] The PokeCommunity Game-Along V: The Gaming Strikes Back

Can't believe I missed the fighting games one I'm going to sob violently.

I think we'll go for Kula World as the game of choice! Cute little platform puzzler, move a beach ball around little levels. Nice wind-down from GT madness lol.
I lied this was one of the most frantic puzzlers ever, I completely forgot half of the things this game threw at you... but I managed to beat it finally! Isn't much in the way of an 'end' screen, so here is a screenshot if my REALLY bad score:

Oh I finished my game like 3 days after I posted it. It was okay but not as good as some other similar games in the fake programming genre.

September - The Vapors

Ladies, gentleman and everything in-between, it's time. Time for us to rise up, strap-on an unnecessary number of belts, spike up our hair until it defies gravity and equip an impractically large weapon. Let us become the heroes we were born to be. Let's kill god.

This month our theme is JRPGs.

I don't have time for a long JRPG with the Archipelago about to start so I'm just going to play through Dragon Quest II, which should be under 20 hours according to HowLongToBeat.

Super thrilled about this theme, and then I realized I don't really have much put aside to play for it. Given some fairly limited options, and a morbid curiosity to fill in a gap, I'll likely play Final Fantasy II, and if that doesn't end up working for some reason, I may as well try out Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. At least one, or hopefully both, will be completed this month, and whichever one I finish first is my entry for this month.
Besides, I'm unsure how acceptable School Idol Festival All Stars is as an entry for JRPG lol

Well, since I've already gone through SoD, I'll have to go with somthing else this time... >.>
Acording to IMDb, even something like Paper Mario is considered a 'J-RPG', though I'm not too sure about that lol. I'd like to try out Mother 3 for this month, if that counts. But if not, (and PM doesn't either) then I'll have to find a better list to look through lol.

Me before reading this month's theme: I'm kinda burned out of playing long RPG lately, I'm looking forward this month's theme.

Me after reading this month's them: Oh no... *Googles shortest JRPG*

Yeah, not exactly happy with this theme. But it's a good opportunity to try something new. Or maybe finish something I started years ago and never finished... Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. I beat the first game in the bundle years ago (so it's time to replay it), but the second one didn't really click with me back then.

I'm actually thinking of doing Paper Mario Thousand Year Door for this challenge since I bought it shortly after its Switch launch and haven't played it yet lol. But yeah will wait and see if it counts.

From what I can see, Mother 3 is generally accepted as a JRPG. However, Paper Mario apparently isn't? Honestly though, if you don't have anything else you want to play, I'd accept it. It's an RPG from Japan.

Couldn't decide what to play so I polled my twitter followers and I'll be playing Final Fantasy II.

The paper mario series in Japan is called Paper Mario RPG and it's absolutely a jrpg!

Hesitates to pick anything grindier this month with Archipelago planned. Also plans a Civilization challenge a few days from now with a one-week runtime. (Usually only takes about a day to complete, but still.) Technically plans to play Earthbound in the Archipelago game. Would rather pick something less modded as the official choice.

Selects Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Has not played it for about two years on the nose. Shaves off a ton of time by not engaging much with the monastery. Plans to use all the non-students (plus Dimitri and Annette to fill slots) on a Blue Lions route.

I'll likely play Final Fantasy II

Final Fantasy II has been completed! It was... roughly about how I expected it to be. I can't say I thought it was particularly great, but I still enjoy classic Final Fantasy, and it sated my curiousity. Final playtime came out to about 25 hours, emulated for speed-up on grinding sessions.

Finished Trails in the Sky! Clocked in at about 40 hours, and that's with near-constant use of the built-in speed up button. Still one of my favorite games ever, the world building is phenomenal. The game is the first in a trilogy, so it's a bit of a slow burn until the last few hours, but even so, everything is just executed very well. There's about a 50:50 split between the time you spend in combat and story progression/dialogue, so it never feels too grindy. (In fact, the game doesn't want you grinding much at all becase experience points fall off hard after being a certain level above enemies)

So our added spice is... we're using a randomiser! This randomiser does some very fun things, including:
  • Randomising equipment:
    • Stats given
    • Weapon models
    • Elemental attributes
    • Status effects
    • Elemental immunities/weaknesses
    • Skills given
  • Enemy attacks
  • Enemy models
So we're in for a fun time! Just to show an example, here is what one of the characters - Steiner - currently has on his weapon (spoilered as I know Setsuna is wanting to play the game at some point with as little knowledge as possible):
Spoiler:

Completed Fire Emblem: Three Houses once again. Wrote up a game journal entry on it.

Compared it to Engage while playing it, from time to time. Welcomed the better story and supports. Still dislikes the monastery and lesson plans, even after cutting most of it out. Does not miss Three Houses's class and skill system either. Prefers Engage, at least as far as replays ago. Enjoyed playing, regardless.
