[Event] The PokeCommunity Game-Along V: The Gaming Strikes Back

Oh! Forgot to update here but I finished FF2. :) It wasn't so bad if you grind but it also made it rather boring. Still, glad I've played it now!

Finished Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. I did a quick run through FF1 using only only 4 fighters and then finally beat FF2 for the first time. It was pretty mid. I still don't like this take on skill-based levelling. But the story was okay and I enjoyed the "learning and asking keywords" mechanic. I'll hopefully write about it more in my journal soon.

Ended up playing through the truthful route of Digimon Survive for my game since it was a little shorter than the others (and sped up by NG+ lol). Still a good game that people should give a chance even if not fans of the franchise - especially if you like Fire Emblem.

I barely managed to finish Mother 3 in time for the event!
Edit: Okay, now that I have a moment... Earthbound (and by extension Mother 3) was a series I'd always hear (or read) people talk about fondly, as well as inspiring a lot of really cool games that I do know well and enjoy watching, but the EB/M series itself was one I never really took interest in. Then, after making a really good friend who loves the series and offered to help me get Mother 3 set up, I decided to just give it a try to see what I though. I had a few minor nitpicks with some of the 'older game lack of QoL', and the story pacing for the first 3 chapters can be a bit shocking if you're not expecting to get tossed between different characters and plots like that, but overall I absolutely loved it. It was extremely quirky at times in the best possible way, the characters were all great, and the plot (with exception to a bit of a 'Luke-warm' ending) was phenomenal. Solid 8.5/10.

So I did beat FF9 but... I haven't been able to get like a shot of the credits or anything, because I beat the last boss and then got this:

[PokeCommunity.com] The PokeCommunity Game-Along V: The Gaming Strikes Back

It was still working and everything, but for some reason it just... hung and wouldn't progress into the final cutscenes and as a result the credits...

Fun run overall! Had some really nasty boss combinations which made for a nice challenge, and a lot of the equipment was quite hard to obtain, same with the skills!

October - Be Afraid

It's the spooky month. The month where ghosts float down dark hallways, killers watch you through your windows at night, ghouls creak about in the attic and annoying little shits egg your house if your forget to stock up on Halloween treats. For once, we're going to embrace all that darkness and do a theme that is actually thematically appropriate for the time of year.

That's right, it's horror month. The game you play must either be a horror game or, for those of you that cannot stomach horror, a game with a horror aesthetic. An example of the former would be Silent Hill . An example of the latter would be Castlevania.

Funny this came up! I already decided weeks ago that I wanted to start playing Castlevania: Lament of Innocence on October 1st because it fits the month. Put me down for that.

Edit: I also really appreciate the inclusion of games with a horror aesthetic for people like me who wouldn't want to play a horror game but would love to interpret the theme in a less direct way.

I'm going to play Doom 3 this month, which should be the only mainline Doom game I haven't played. It's much more of a horror game than the other games in the series, but still isn't a full-blown survivor horror game like Resident Evil since you still get lots of ammunition. Still, it easily passes the "horror aesthetics" test with flying colors.

This is actually really convenient as I was hoping to start playing Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia sometime this month anyway, so I'll be picking that.

Double posting because I just finished Still Wakes the Deep :P It wasn't very long, only about 4 hours apparently.

It was.. okay!
definitely more of a walking simulator kind of horror game, with a few stealth sections reminiscent of Alien: Isolation or Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I had kinda hoped it would be a little more scary, though :/

The game was EXTREMELY linear, and I definitely would have wanted to see more paths/gameplay options, especially since there's no combat. The visuals, environmental design, and story were all really good, however, and the voice acting was top notch. Every character has a strong Scottish accent, and they all put a lot of emotion into their performances. Story-wise, it definitely plays out like a horror movie - Event Horizon, Aliens, and The Thing all come to mind, if those movies took place entirely on an oil rig in the North Sea.

Overall, I liked it, and would probably give it a 7/10. It's a bit lacking as a game, but I thought it was a worthy horror experience.

Consider Lament of Innocence finished! I enjoyed some sections and disliked others, leading to an interesting emotional rollercoaster of a playthrough. I'd say it's a fine game, but doesn't really feel like what I expected it to be until about 80% of the way through. It feels like a game you'd really want to experience for the story, and want to find other things you enjoy about it along the way. For example, The Forgotten One is one of my new favourite boss fights in the entire series.
By the time the castle crumbled behind me as I left, I'd say I still enjoyed myself, everything considered.

Finished Misao like... the day I said I'd play it, but only the base game. I finally got around to finishing the extra stuff which I thought from the description would take me longer than it did but it was only about 20 minutes. I thought the game was alright! Not really that scary and leaned a bit comical at times but that's probably for the best. I guess if you like RPG Maker horror games it's worth a play but otherwise probably not.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention I finished Order of Ecclesia like 4 days ago lol. Edit: and now that I have a moment, I can get into it a bit.

It was by far the easiest Castlevania game to full-clear that I've played up to now, but after how much there is to do in a game like Portrait of Ruin, I welcome the simplicity.
The map being made up of a bunch of smaller locations helped make the game feel more involved without feeling too repetitive thanks to the constant change of scenery.
The highlight of the game for me, however, was the bosses and how well most of them were programmed. The fights really feel like they're meant to be beaten damageless (not to mention there's literally an item you get just for doing that in this game), so a lot of them reward you for paying attention, while the fights themselves never really get too hard on their own. (with exactly 1 exception that nearly killed my interest in the game my first time through... >.>) With the exception of one boss and the rather terrible late game grind just for a 1-4 odds item drop from one of two really annoying chests, I'd go as far as to call Ecclesia my favorite Castlevania game that I've played. It's easily the one I've done the most in, and most of it was thankfully not beyond my personal skill level. Easy 9/10.

I finished Hollowbody earlier today. It was fun tribute to Silent Hill. The beginning was really strong, but the middle of the game is fairly linear and not that interesting. I also wish the game was a little bit longer and had more complex puzzles. I'll post my thoughts in my journal later.

The base game of Doom 3 is complete. All in all, the combat might be average but it completely nailed the atmosphere better than any Doom game before or since. I have not beaten the DLC, but I have reached the credits of the original game and I believe that's enough.
