For this month, we're going back in time! Back to a time when 3D technology was new and exciting, the console wars were bitter and bloody, the internet was still in its infancy, and when Square made Final Fantasy games that weren't complete trash. February's theme is Retro!
What is Retro, you ask? That largely depends on how old you are and what you grew up with! Got your own opinion on what classifies as retro? We've got a thread for that right
here.
But for the Game Along, the following rules apply:
- For consoles, anything from the
fifth generation or before.
- For handhelds, anything from the
sixth generation or before.
- For PC, any game released in the year 2000 or before.
That's the basic guidelines. Now, for some specifics:
- Ports and HD Remasters (slightly updated visuals or quality-of-life features – think Final Fantasy VII-IX on current generation consoles or Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask 3D for examples)
DO count.
- Remakes (significant changes to visuals and gameplay – think Link's Awakening on the Switch, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, 2019's Resident Evil 2, etc) do
NOT count.
- Modern games that have been made in a retro style (think Undertale, Axiom Verge, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon) do
NOT count.
Obviously you do not have to play the game on the original hardware it was released on. That would be silly.
Questions, suggestions? Post in here. Good luck!
