Maractus actually has a good movepool, unlike Carnivine.
There is also a man in the Fighting Game Community (FGC) who is considered wise by many named Bafael, and his profile picture has been Maractus for like 10 years now.

Maractus is made up of the words maraca and cactus. The way it sways left and right in gen 5 makes me believe it is trying to dance to Mexican tunes like you would shake maracas.

Maractus' abilities are very accurate to what a cactus would have. Rather odd that it doesn't have an ability like sand rush. Other than that I can't hate this pokemon. In Japan and french its name is Maracachi which has the word Mariachi, a popular type of Mexican music. And in German its name is Maracamba like the popular phrase "¡Ay, caramba!" in Spanish and Portuguese.
