[PokeCommunity.com] VGPOTW #9: Sharpen Dem Blades

Welcome to Video Game's Poll of the Week! Thanks to the permission of Pokemon General's moderator Brendino, Video Games will now be hosting a weekly series that pits certain video game characters, levels, and universes against other to see which one will come out on top! In last week's Poll of the Week, Amnesia spooked it's ways into PC's favorite horror game series!
Expand on your answers! Tell us why you prefer one video game element over another! Posts that don't elaborate as to why specific elements were chosen will be deleted, and a warning may be given out through an infraction if it's a reoccurring issue.
If you have a matchup that you would like to see, whether between video game characters or worlds/universes, send me a VM or PM and if your matchup gets chosen then an emblem will be given out as a reward!

    Without further ado:

Who is video games' greatest swordsman?

What would you say is his chances in making it into Super Smash Bros. as an update/how would you react to him being in it/do you think he would be a good fit in the series?

Well, the actual chances are pretty slim, haha! Until they open up third party series to more characters, unless they want to call Megaman X different from Megaman, though technically I believe they take place in the same continuity, with Megaman X being way down the line. Anyway, his standard gameplay would convert to Smash pretty easily. Kinda tired from Pre Sequel and ORAS demo last night and can't think of more to write, haha!

The first swordsman I think of are Link and Marth.

I also voted other for my favorite Soul Caliber swordsmen:
Mitsurugi, Cervantes, Ivy, Sophitia, Cassandra, Raphael, Setsuka

My man, Marth. Got to vote for the Legendary Hero-King. He's not exactly the strongest swordsmen in his own universe or period, but he's got all kinds of flair and style (i.e Dancing Blade), which is more than enough to make up for his lack of strength. (Also, is totally not my Smash main ever since Melee, and thus heavily biased towards him.)

Didn't vote for them because there is no possible way for them to win, but might as well mention them. In particular, it's three swordsmen from the Trails series. Arios Maclaine, Cassius Bright, and Yun Kafei. The first two are S-Rank Bracers, a title which is only carried by four people in total. To add to that, both of them are undoubtedly some of the strongest characters in the Trails series, to date; which is a bold statement, when we have characters like Arianrhod and McBurn. Yun Kafei has never appeared in the series yet and has only been mentioned, but he must have some merit if both of his students (Arios and Cassius) became S-Rank Bracers. Also, all three of these characters share the Hachiyou Ittou Ryou, which is a badass sword style that uses a tachi, and some of the Crafts of the style are absolutely stunning, like Urahayate.

While Link, Meta Knight and Frog where pretty obvious choices for me (because they are awesome), I'd rather talk about those not mentioned in the poll.

Glenn from Chrono Cross: while he's basically just Frog's counterpart, he is enough of his own character and as if it wasn't enough, he's also one of the best characters in the entire game.
Stocke from Radiant Historia: he's able to use sword and magic evenly, which makes him a well balanced fighter and he's also able to switch between alternate timelines and use different abilities like being able to locate invisible traps.
Cyan from FF6: while far from being my favorite character in the game, he has a lot of different sword technics and is able to cast spells. There's also a glitch with him, that let's him kill every enemy in the game.

True! It would be interesting though if they made a skin of Mega Man as Zero; don't exactly know if that would entirely work, but it could be possible!

You were good with Marth in Melee? Roy was so much better haha.

Do you think that Cyan is better than Cloud Strife?

For me, it's got to be Link. Easily, haha. Personally, I'm more than familiar with him, as I've been following Legend of Zelda series for almost a decade. In most games, he might not talk, but that doesn't exactly mean much; actions that he takes speak large words for him. As far as combating goes, he's above-average from get-go, and continues improving as he gains better weapons, knowledge, experience, and gadgets as you progress through the game. He's also pretty great at Super Smash Brothers; one of the characters I find myself using most of the time.

Alongside above, I'm also a fan of Zero, due to familiarity. Though, one person I like more than him is Protoman. Although this guy was inspired by former, seemingly, as he contains similar body features and whatnot, I feel that he's played some form of a bigger role in terms of games. He was leader in Megaman Battle Network series, leading his team to defeat Darkloids (even though he turns into one of them at some point) and save the net, place where NetNavis reside, from corruption.

I'm also pretty fond of Colonel, because of similar reasons as Protoman. Their personalities are sort of alike, but one thing that distinguishes him from Proto is battling style.

You were good with Marth in Melee? Roy was so much better haha.
But, Roy was ass in Melee LOL. Marth was better than Roy in every possible way literally, not even joking when I say this. Roy gave the illusion that he might had been better because it was much easier to sweet spot with him, since the sweet spot for his sword was in the middle as opposed to Marth's having his on the tip.

Do you think that Cyan is better than Cloud Strife?
In terms of bodily strength, Cloud is better, because carrying a giant two handed sword around and using it, takes a lot from you. Most of Clouds attacks are based on brute strength, but they take a while to successfully use them. There's of course Omnislash, which combines strength and speed, but since it's a Limit Break, it takes a while until he's able to use it. You can't simply Omnislash everything.
Cyan on the other hand has access to his moves all the time (eight different), one being an instant kill move, plus his Desperation Attack. He's using one handed swords (well technically katanas are two handed, but the game devs didn't really care about that), allowing more of a agile fighting style. His style is a combination of a samurai and a fencer: dodge the enemy's attack and hit harder back, by aiming for his weakspot.
Cyan's also not reliant on Materia for spell casting, he just has to learn them beforehand.

There is an easy way for Cloud to win against Cyan, though. If he challenges him to a battle on motorcycles, Cyan loses, because he's not good at machines.

I think it's just moreover that I enjoy using fast characters and I preferred Roy's speed over Marth's. Might not necessarily mean he's better in the end, but I find that he's easier to handle.

...I think you're confusing the two. Marth is the faster one. Always has been the faster one.

    Besides, Lucina's where it's at.

Um... you do realize that SAO has 2 game adaptations, right?
We were even talking about it when you asked about what to play on Vita.

That doesn't automatically make him as a video game character.

I think the point more over trying to be made is that as good of a swordsman Kirito is, I believe he's more recognized as an anime icon than a video game character. The games aren't as popular in the United States as say possibly in Japan - I have no statistical data to support how well the games do in Japan, but I know the Vita just doesn't perform as well over in the US - but that's why there is an "Other" option if you believe that a video game character such as Kirito is a better swordsman than all of the other competition listed and you want to vote for him.
