    Vote on your Favorite Protagonist!

Hello and welcome to a new multi-platform event, that will last several weeks!

In this event, your objective is to vote for your favorite Pokémon protagonist across a series of polls. To begin, we will start by region*, and see who is the favourite protagonist from each area**. Afterwards, the winner will form a tournament round, where we will do 5 sets of up to 4*** winners, and then take the winners and 3 best-second-place protags from there into 2 sets of four, then a final poll.

    Where can I vote?

You can vote for the first set of people in this thread at the top - the Kanto nominees! You can also vote on our social media pages: Twitter (will use its own poll system), Bluesky (a Google poll), Instagram (a Google poll) and Facebook (a Google poll). Yes, it's better to not go around voting multiple times, but we won't be monitoring things that closely. But don't cheat, that's just boring. This means the winner of each poll will be from all polls (here, Twitter, Google poll) added together, not per platform.

Polls will run roughly 4 days, and be posted every week as a new thread (or on social media, as a new post). We may speed things up for the spin-off regions.

Meanwhile, share some propaganda for your pick each week! Take about why you're voting for your character, and make fun of the others (respectfully, of course). We'll also use the results and input for a Daily article summarising the whole event once it ends.

    * Hisui will be treated as separate to Sinnoh.
** Spinoff games will also be considered! Orre will feature, while we will also consider the Ranger games' regions separately, but lump the Snap/New Snap regions (and hence protagonists) together.
*** We may see what the Legends: Z-A protags look like before we hit the tournament phase... pending TPC(i). If so, we'll do a poll on them! Otherwise, one set of 4 polls will have less options... Or we can consider a second chance for the losing protag with the most amount of votes!

    Rules

    1. No Trolling - This includes things like voting on behalf of other users, inputting joke responses in the Google Forms, using bots or creating alt accounts to try and game the voting system, and other dishonest activities. Please don't do that stuff.
    2. Have Fun - We all love Pokémon, and we hope that you derive enjoyment and have a good time with this event!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this event, feel free to contact bobandbill.

    Previous Polls

    By region/game:

Kanto: Red, in a narrow win over Leaf! Chase and Elaine were well behind.
Johto: Kris, in another narrow win over Gold! In fact, Gold won on the forums, but not in the other two platforms. Lyra was a distant third.
Hoenn: May, in the first clear victory in these series of polls. Brendan and his hat were no match.
Sinnoh: Dawn, who basically murdered poor Lucas in the polls.
Unova: Hilda, in a very narrow victory over Rosa (only 2 votes as the difference). This time third place had a respectable turnout (Hilbert), while Nate did okay but was comfortably fourth.
Orre: Wes won out - Michael got some votes especially on Twitter, but couldn't keep up with the cool teen.
Kalos (XY): Serena. It was even on Twitter, but everywhere else, especially on the forums, she ran out comfortably.
Alola: Selene won on each poll convincingly. Chicken hat too powerful!
Galar: Gloria was the victor... over Victor. Every poll was won.
Fiore (Ranger 1): Solana won by a couple votes, after the polls all together were tied! Lunick was so close there.
Almia (Ranger 2): Kellyn wins, and breaks the streak of female protagonists winning!
Oblivia (Ranger 3): Summer won across all polls - close on Twitter, but on the forums pretty one-sided.
Hisui: Akari won with a bit over twice the number of votes overall.
Paldea: Juliana won by a similar amount over Florian.
Snap games: Todd Snap wins! The OG won out over two others with no obvious name available.
Legends: Z-A: Paxton wins! It was tight, but he did come ahead in every poll, even if in two of them he won by 1 vote.
Conquest: Hero won after a slow start! Heroine did win the Twitter poll by 1 vote however.
TCG 2: Mint won with twice the votes on the forum, although Twitter's poll was tied.
PBR: Cyndy won by a mere two votes! It was tied on Twitter and the Google form.
Masters: Scottie won by 2 votes on Twitter, and was tied on the forum poll in the lowest turnout.

    Finals:

Round 1: Red won by 4 votes over Hilda in a tight affair, despite Hilda winning on the forums. Will she make the semi finals? Paxton came third and Kellyn had... a few votes, actually.
Round 2: Dawn had a comfortable victory over Gloria, who did worse than Hilda in 2nd place. Summer upset Juliana for third place, proving nobody really cares for school uniforms.
Round 3: May won on all polls, but Wes did well - he performed better than Gloria as a second-placer. Hilda confirmed her spot in the semi-finals. Hero (Conquest) nabbed third.

Thanks to PoryKid575 and Arcaneum for CSS.

I'm going with Kris this time. For one thing, she was the first female playable character to ever be an option, which is a milestone for Pokemon. Todd and Scottie don't stand a chance.

Here they are! One of these looks a little different from the others I suppose... lack of good character art available (from their debut game anyway).

    Kris > Serena > Todd > Scottie

Of the first-round winners, Kris is my favorite. The only potential matchup where I might choose someone else is Kris vs. May.

Absolutely no question Kris for me.

Serena because she's the only one I've played as, as well as the only traveling companion from the anime. The fact she won her first round so narrowly actually surprised me. Kris has a neat design and an important history, but I have no connection to her. Todd did appear in the anime, so I'm surprised he's dead last behind Scottie, who has no special history I'm aware of.

He does not have any special history, no. Never appeared in anything outside Pokemon Masters.

If I remember correctly, Serena won her first round comfortably here, but lost or almost lost in the Twitter poll against Calem. Now it's the opposite against Kris. Very interesting, I remember Serena being insanely popular back during the XY anime. Also worth noting poor Todd is no longer in dead last, having overtaken Scottie.

One thing that's occurred to me is: What would the contest look like if we used runoff polls (i.e., next poll is between Top 2) whenever a poll ended with no-one getting over 50%, or a bracket to ensure every round is a clean 1v1. A couple candidates lost to someone with a narrow plurality (Leaf vs Red and Rosa vs Hilda), so I was curious how the field would look if they got a one-on-one. Obviously, we can't change the rules for a contest already well underway, but I think if we do polls like this in the future (and I hope we do, as it's a really fun and engaging activity for the community), I think it's a format worth exploring. What do you folks think?

Thing is, probably more people these days are familar with Masters than Todd - Snap is an old game, and unless you're a long-term Pokemon fan who watched the anime, you wouldn't have any connection with the anime bits involving Todd either. That said, it is at odds with the Masters characters poll having one of the lowest turnouts. Maybe people who engaged with that are dedicated fans of them.

I'm certainly open to trying out things differently! One concern I have with that format is poll fatigue - this is already going to run 3 or so months long in total, with multiple polls some weeks to keep things moving. Asking people to vote again with, at times, less popular (relatively low voted-for options) removed on the same thing, multiple times may get too repetitive.

A nice way around that would be a preferencial system (you vote 1 for your most favourite, 2 for your 2nd most, etc; then if 50% isn't hit, the lowest-voted candidate is removed and we include 2nd preferences from those voters, etc etc.), ala the Australian election system. The downside there is... you need to do an entirely offsite voting system (or figure it out manually) as the forums and etc don't allow that level of complexity. And it's clear Twitter gets more engagement than bsky, etc because people can just vote then and there, rather than having to click offsite first.

Yes, I also thought about the ranked/transferable system.

While it's not the same, Xenforo (the forum software PC uses) does allow you to set the number the number of options that can be voted for to more than one, and I believe Google forms does as well.

TierMaker, the most popular site for tier-lists, has a sister site called Bracket fights, where you can set up a bracket for others to use similar to tier templates on TM, so that's another possibility. I did a quick search for a similar sites that used the ranked/transferable method, but I could find anything.
