Was Whitney hard to beat for you?

Honestly, not too much. If using Bayleef I'd just PoisonPowder and chip away with Razor Leaf, and if using one of the others, I'd just brute-force it and sack off some of my lesser Pokémon if Rollout got too strong.

I did love how Whitney didn't actually give you the badge upon defeating her though, it was a simple but clever trick to catch us off guard. In RBY, once you beat the Leader, you had the badge, end of story. Whereas Whitney cries, you check your Trainer card and.. sure enough, no badge. Your only option is to leave, where the Lass tells you that 'Whitney always cries when she loses.. she'll stop eventually.' Super funny back in the day.
 
yes :( HGSS is even worse because of abilities since I always get one of my teammates infatuated! the only time she was a breeze was when I caught a male nidoran, waited for mum to send me a moonstone and ran straight at her with a whole nidoking! that was the first Silver nuzlocke where I lost absolutely nobody.
 
I usually use status effects to beat Miltank, and occasionally I lose my first fight to Whitney because of bad RNG, but I've always beaten her on my second try at worst. I've found her to be on the harder side of the gym leaders in the series, but nowhere near the hardest. Not even the hardest in her own region, even, since Morty and Clair are both tougher.
 
As a kid, yeah, she was tough.

These days no. It's pretty easy to cripple the miltank with status and even sand attack. Of course luck can go wrong and that will still make it tough.
 
I haven't played GSC extensively but I find her HGSS incarnation pretty difficult. She's not the hardest battle by a long shot, but I usually have to strategize carefully to avoid getting caught in a rollout trap while not being able to move due to infatuation.
 
Yeah, in Gold my Quillava was underleveled and I didn't bother getting that Machop trade. I think she beat me some good 4 to 5 times before I lucked out with some misses lol. It was probably one of the most fun gym battles I had, since most of them tend to be easier. Granted, it's not *that* hard, but a few factors can up the difficulty (like not having any super effective move against a bulky normal type).
Also I love Miltank's sprite artwork. It's just a little cow who loves to roll around. I can't even get mad at her lmao
 
I struggled with her a lot as a kid so I would think she was hard, but as an adult I realize she was just a skill check all along. Especially because in both gens you are given a female Machop that is not only super effective against Miltank but being female grants immunity to attract. Also in my recent SS run I had a female Heracross that one shot her Miltank after 2 leers. It was the greatest payback I have ever delivered. In a recent Gold run I poisoned her with Bayleef and stalled with Reflect. I enjoyed watching Miltank's HP deplete to 0.

In my last playthrough about 2 days ago, i beat her on the third~ try... however its worth mentioning i absoloutely knew what i was getting into and after the first two i came up with a pretty decent plan to beat her. so it wasnt that hard for me this time. i do remember her being difficult when i first played crystal though...
 
I don't recall having any problems with her gym battle, but my first playthrougth was so long ago that I don't remember. Nowadays, it really depends on my rules and restrictions. Sometimes, it's a breeze, sometimes I have to stop and think a little bit about it. And sometimes, I have to come up with creative, pixel-perfect (for the lack of better word) strategies to take her down.
 
i'm of the mindset that it truly comes down to your team at that point in the game. there are times i've had no problems with her and times where she was a bit difficult. on on objective level though, a miltank with that moveset at that point in the game is a pretty fierce contender.
 
Not if you know what to expect and have a Pokemon ready to counter it. For me, that means a female Geodude/Graveler, since it resists all of its attacks and she can't Attract it.

But yeah, she can be a pain if you don't come prepared for her with the right Pokemon.
 
Back when GSC first got released, I definitely had a hard time taking Whitney's Miltank out.
I only used attacking moves and got swept quite handily multiple times.
It was a very early lesson on the value of stat-altering moves such as Growl and Smokescreen, as well the value of a Pokémon's bulkiness in battle.
(aka "Why did this LV20 Tackle barely damage that Miltank")
 
When I was a kid and had no idea how to deal with her yeah she was challenging but these days at most she just delays her defeat and there's a part of me when she starts crying about losing that goes "That was for my past self!"
 
My first time ever facing her was a challenge, but I got better in my second attempt. I saved the game before battle and reset so I didn't lose half my money when I learned at that time in the first 2 generations you lost half your money if you were swept, learned that from the second encounter with your rival.

In gen 4, never had any issue with her in my playthrough.
