  • - 3D era of Pokemon sorta blows. Gen 5 was the last beautiful looking set of games.
    - Bulbasaur is the best and only Gen 1 starter
    - Pokemon should stop adding new mons after we hit a thousand. It's too much at this point to keep track of them all.
    - Emulation of older titles should be encouraged because everyone needs to experience the golden era of this franchise. It also opens the doors for ROM hacking ,which I believe plays a big part in keeping a good chunk of this fandom alive.

    damn this hurts :c

Sorry babe, you asked for the truth and I delivered. A few cool Pokémon designs came out of Gen 3, but that's all the credit I'm willing to give. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Mega's were a horrible idea and I'm glad they're gone.

Battle Frontiers are overrated and can stay gone.

  • ok time to add with some takes of my own

    - gen 3's battle frontier was the best form of it and there hasn't been a post-game facility besides maybe b2w2's pokemon world tournament that came close to that level of enjoyment i had
    - gen 5 is ok at best, but doesn't deserve worship status. i will give gen 5 the credit it deserves as it introduced really cool pokemon, seasons, and had an above average story, but b2w2 as a game imo is better than bw. bw's battle subway was bad and it felt like a steep cliff drop in quality from gen 4's post-game
    - there absolutely needs to be more mini-games in pokemon games besides contests. contests are ok for those who enjoy them, but i'm looking for something more akin to pokeathlon in hgss, or mantine surfing in usum. something fun, yknow? mostly to appease people who aren't 100% into battling and all that
    - fr/lg are my least favourite remakes. i don't exactly hate them and i don't think it's fair to them to say that they're trash, but out of every remake i've played so far, i've enjoyed them the absolute least.
    - grass starters have consistently had some of the best designs to this day. i will only argue with maybe chesnaught as it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but every other grass starter is B+ at absolute worst when it comes to design which only makes me like the type more
    - wallace isn't a bad champion or character, actually. neither is steven. i like them both about equally.
    - z-moves are eh
    - dynamax isn't a bad gimmick but i'd rather see it exclusive to alola as it makes sense there lore-wise.
    - megas are a cool idea that should make a return because it gave some underrated pokemon (ampharos, mawile, lopunny, etc) a chance to shine

  • Mega's were a horrible idea and I'm glad they're gone.

This. Most of the designs aren't appealing either, with the possible exception of Mega Charizard (which could have been made into a regional form) and Mega Diancie (which could have easily been a form change a la Hoopa Unbound).

    - Pokemon should stop adding new mons after we hit a thousand. It's too much at this point to keep track of them all.

This too, although I have my reservations. New designs are part of the long-lasting appeal of the games, but I'd rather have about 40-50 new Pokémon that are well-designed than 80-100 that are mostly forgettable. Also, more regional forms! I don't think the concept has been fully tapped yet.

    As for my own opinions...
-The Let's Go games were genuinely good, both as games on their own and as remakes. My only problem with them was the reduced Pokédex, but they were the most fun I'd had with a Pokémon game in a long time. Plus, they look fantastic, perhaps even better than Sw/Sh.
-HG/SS are great games but I sometimes feel they... missed the mark on some of the character redesigns. Case in point: Will and Karen actually looked like specialists of their preferred types in Gen II, but they don't in Gen IV. I also feel this happened in retrospect with Lance and especially Koga's designs after LGPE came out; their designs in the latter games were so good, it's hard to look at their Gen IV designs in the same light again.
-HG/SS also botched Eusine's characterization by making him focus only on Suicune. They should have kept his general knowledge of the Johto legends as well as his continued presence in the post-game from Crystal. (In fact, I refused to catch Suicune in my last playthrough of SoulSilver because I didn't want him to disappear for good). If there's ever a Johto re-remake, I hope this is recitifed.
-As much as I love the original Kanto adventures, the next time we revisit the region (after a possible Johto re-remake) should take place farther along in the timeline - 5-7 years after G/S/C at a minimum. That said, the idea of revisiting Kanto and not finding any familiar faces in it does cause me a bit of anguish, so not far enough in the timeline for everyone to be dead (unless they appear as ghosts).

  • Just realized the thread is for Pokémon opinions people will defend - not Pokémon themselves. Another consequence of tired posting! So I suppose it's time to reply properly, since I have a few of these.

    1) I love Z-moves and want to see more of them, despite them being fairly unpopular. I highly prefer Z-moves to Dynamax/Gigantamax.
    2) Sinnoh's region layout is boring and my opinion on that didn't change with BDSP.
    3) Pikachu clones are very cute and I like them all a lot.
    4) Charizard is super boring.
    5) XY and Kalos were awesome and I miss when those games were new a lot. Even now when the negatives of those games stand out more, I still think they're great and nowhere near as bad as some people make them out to be.
    6) Let's Go was really fun!
    7) The competitive scene is so exhausting and boring. It's always the same 10-15 Pokémon on everyone's teams. I tried watching some tournament battles but got so tired of seeing the same things.

Opinion #7 is especially strong for me... it just makes me zzzz. :x

  • one more (pfft let's be real i'll add more as i think of them)

    - newer pokemon games are not necessarily worse than older ones. people don't like to admit their nostalgia makes them think older pokemon games provided them with a perfect experience when in reality that particular game might've been a big part of their childhood, been an important moment in their lives etc, rather than any actual objective comparison between newer/older games. the pokemon fanbase gets especially tiring with constantly wishing for things to be as they were back then without realising that back then we were also children/teens and had a lot more free time to spend on pokemon games.

this isn't to say that newer pokemon games are flawless, so don't take that from this post. there's many things to rightly criticise about newer games. but to pretend that the older games are somehow perfection itself is disingenuous as heck lol

  • Merry Christmas! Here are some more opinions.

-Even though Pokémon music is good as a whole, it didn't start being truly great until Generation VI with the transition to 3DS. Out of all the things that were worse off for said transition, music was not one of them. This is why I'm glad OR/AS and LGPE (and even BD/SP and PLA) exist: they took the music from the old games to a whole new level.
-That said, the music in the GB games is also great, if not better than in the GBA and DS games. Heck, many of the themes in the original G/S/C are better than their remixes in HG/SS, such as National Park, Burned Tower, Vermilion City, the Kanto Gym Leader battle theme... (This is also why I'm hoping for Johto reremakes - so that they can have a second shot at these themes.)
-Steven and Cynthia's constant appearances during the plots of their respective games are offputting rather than endearing. To me, it came across as them stalking the player and pretending that their meetings happened by coincidence. Conversely, I love how Lance, Wallace (in Emerald), Alder, Iris and even Diantha and Leon are introduced - they're doing their own thing, not following the player around.
-This is going to sound like blasphemy, but B/W's story wasn't that great like most of the fandom says. I boil this down to the sole existence of Ghetsis, and the obvious reveal of his villainy, undermining what could have been a very interesting discussion on the nature of Pokémon ownership by painting the other side as evil. This is why I like the Heroes of Fire and Thunder manga's plot better than the game's - N himself commands Team Plasma on his own right and still intends to go forward with his plans for liberation, making his point stronger.
-Even though it does take playing the original S/M to fully appreciate them, some of the plot changes in US/UM made for a better gameplay experience. S/M was too much about Lillie and her family drama, and that took away from the player's own journey and other relationships. US/UM was instead more about Hau and the player (and in US only, about Dulse and Zossie experiencing a new world), which I found more enjoyable. US/UM also happened to give both Lillie and Gladion fairer endings than in S/M (except for the part where their still-disturbed mother remains in their lives, but oh well - you can't have your cake and eat it).
-The designs for the Gym Leaders in Sw/Sh are nice, but... they make me miss the sense of individuality that previous generations' type specialists had. They did this better even in the previous generation - giving the Trial Captains a pin to signal their status while allowing them to dress according to their personality and type preference.

Just like Sheep, I'l keep adding opinions as I think of them! This is it for now.

They could also make Pokemon fusions canon. That and regional forms should keep the franchise alive and fresh for at least 3-4 more gens.

    - The games aren't getting easier, you're just getting smarter and the games are less grindy.

I just finished a Gen I run where I absolutely demolished most gym leaders and the E4 + Champion being what, 10 levels weaker and without using any items. The problem is that in earlier generations you were either likely:
    1) Younger and/or dumber so you weren't aware of how the mechanics and the game worked
    2) Using weaker Pokémon
    3) Had to grind and you mistook the busywork for actual difficulty
    4) The terrible movepool made things artificially harder

    - While Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves might not have been the greatest ideas, Dynamax most certainly was not. It's very much made for VGC to the point that any other format suffers from it.

    - BW are the worst playing games in the series, having the awkward soft Dexit, Gen V experience mechanics without party wide Exp Share. Their only saving grace is that they attempt to create a cohesive story with more impact and character growth than previous titles. They fail - remember when a Gym Leader said he wouldn't help capture terrorists because the sea accepts all rivers? - but at least they tried.

    - ORAS was peak Pokémon Aesthetics - at least as far as character art goes, I'll admit that some of the tiles are fugly - and SM / SwSh had a bit of a downgrade from there.

    - SM was peak Game Design for the franchise and I'm sad we went to a much more bland map and routes when we went back to Galar.

    - Megas (or at least the Megas of Pokemon that needed Megas) should return as regional variants / alternate evolutions. Mega-Beedrill and Mega-Mawile are way too cool to be trashed.

    - They should bring back the Game Corner but instead of gambling, it should be an arcade (cuz, you know, it's a Game Corner). Port some Pokémon Stadium / Mario Party minigames and call it a day. Maybe even have online connectivity.

The Simi Trio ain't as bad as people make them out to be (Expect Simipour).
    Gen 8 was fun.
Groudon is 50x better then Kyorge.
Gen 1 is the worse Gen.
Bidoof is the best Non-special Pokémon(Like Pseudo-Legends and Starters).
Mega was a cool idea, but Game Freak failed the landing.
    Gold/Ethan is the best protagonist.
    That is all.

  • Are fangame-related opinions allowed here? In any case, I can post the ones related to the main series and then go into the rest if I can.

-The best fangames are usually the ones with shorter stories and good use of previously-released Pokémon to tell a new story. If they want to reduce the emphasis on new Mons, seeing as we're already reaching a thousand, Game Freak should probably go that route for new generations (although... it seems they are already testing the waters with PLA, so we'll see). Plus, it would be interesting to witness how Pokémon like Legendaries and Mythicals are seen outside of their region of origin, like in real-life mythology.
-Furthermore, my favourite kind of fangames are those that are mostly comical in nature. I doubt GF would do something like that to their own franchise, but if they did, I'd be really pleased. Heck, I'd even take a canon game that takes itself less seriously overall (but not without its serious moments, of course).
-The terrain system from the Reborn family of fangames would also be worth porting to the canon games, albeit much less complex (and dare I say unfair and borderline sadistic) than it is in those games.
-I'm on the fence as regards Xenoverse so far, but I repeat that Game Freak should revisit an old region advancing the timeline by a significant stretch so that we can see familiar faces under a new light. (That said... I was still not okay with what XV did to some of the characters, so I do hope Game Freak treats them with more respect.)
-Allister and Acerola are my babies but outside of them, Caspar/Crisante from Xenoverse is probably my favourite Ghost-type specialist ever. He hits so many right notes for me it's unfair. Masked man? Older man? In law enforcement? An Old West-type Sheriff (or actually Marshal)? A trickster with a protective instinct? Standing up to your usual Dark-type crooks with Ghost-types? Ghost-writer done better, and a musician to boot? Resembles my long-time crush Sabin from the Pokémon RéBURST manga? Ahhhhhhh--- I'm in love!
-Other type specialists/Trainers in fangames I like better than most canon ones:
-> Ginger/Claudio from Xenoverse for being an atypical, nerdy-looking Fighting-type specialist (and for another reason, no spoilerinos),
-> Cardinal Chua also from Xenoverse. The mystic aspect to him just... makes him click as a Psychic-type specialist where most canon Psychic-type specialists fail. (He also has a Sigilyph which relates to the above mention of Sabin from RéBURST. The other reason also constitutes spoilerinos),
-> Kaito and Hinata from Uranium for their day/night theme and the fact they're an apparently immortal couple running a Gym together (and both really cute to boot),
-Okay, yes, we need more Gym Leaders with gimmick themes, but the type preferences should stay to some degree. I'll go into further detail about this later.

Gen 5 Pokémon suck (for the most part) and the story is/was never good
Gen 2 is a snooze fest
Kalos could have been so good if everything in it wasn't incredibly easy. Also the zero post game sucked.
