So today I got a call from a number I've never seen before. I was expecting it to someone calling about one of my recent job applications. Instead it was Child Protective Services calling for a Leshawndra or something like that. When I told the caller that there's no one here by that name, she realized that she had called the wrong number.

This isn't the first time someone's had the wrong number, and I'm sure it won't be the last. And I'm sure it's happened to you as well. So what do y'all think of those times when people get the wrong number and call you instead of someone else?

I just strike up a conversation. It's only awkward I you make it awkward.

Oh well, as someone said above, the trick is... try not to make it awkward. Everyone makes mistakes.

I need to highlight the fact that it's really (and by really I mean amazingly) awkward when old people are involved. It happened to me that several times that old people don't even realize they did something wrong, and they continue talking over the phone even after I clearly stated that they are calling the wrong number.

me reading the title of this thread

    LOL! So true.

I've been called by people who had the wrong number several times before, I see numbers that i've never looked at before and am like what? Then they hang up after a few seconds. It's weird.

If it's by phone I'll tell them they have a wrong number so as to not waste their time or mine.

If it's by text, I'll usually mess with them a bit. Pretend I'm who they are looking for. More often than not I will quickly be discovered. Good laugh while it lasts, at least.

Waaaah! I called the wrong number yesterday for the first time in forever.

    I felt so uncomfortable.
"Hi is this ____ auto investments?"
    "No, sorry. Wrong number."
    "...Oh! I'm so sorry!!!"
    *hangs up*
*glares at number to see what I did wrong*

I even double checked the number before I called too!!!

I have had calls and texts from all over the place for the past eight years from people who are looking for someone named Monica.

It is now a running joke and I question what happened to this person. Who is she and where did she go?

    People need you, Monica!

Wow, I feel like such a jerk after reading all these. I just tell them "you have the wrong number" and hang up. Oops.

This doesn't happen to me as often as it used to...probably because we have phones that display the number of the caller on them now, and if I don't recognise the number (or it starts with 0845) I usually just don't bother picking it up. If it's important, they'll leave a message on the answer machine.

I frequently tell call centers they have the wrong number though when I do pick the phone up, in the hopes that they won't call again...and whenever they mispronounce my last name.

I don't experience this often, and I try to be polite when it does happen.

I did have an interesting experience of being harassed by the person with the wrong number though. They called my number expecting it to be their boyfriend. When I politely informed them that they had the wrong number they were okay, conversation over. I then got another call shortly afterwards from the same person, I then informed them again that they had the wrong number. They argued that they had the right number and harassed me as though I was withholding their boyfriend from them or something. I hung up on them and then ignored some subsequent calls...

This hasn't happened to me in years. I think this is due to the fact that I hardly call anyone, ever.

The last time I had a run in with a wrong number, I was calling my dad after high school three years ago, and ended up calling some other man instead. I guessed he was a father because he responded to "dad", haha.

Can't remember a case of this happening TO me. But I have made two wrong calls in my time at work.

First case was when I put 55555 at the end of a number rather than 50555. And let's face it, five fives looks way better. I got some cadet office for that one, and hung up immediately before anyone spoke to me.

The second time was when I was testing a colleague's number that didn't seem to work. It turned out that it was an architecture office in Liverpool and that they'd been getting all the calls we thought that he should be getting... they weren't happy to speak to me about his calls, that's for sure.

It happened rarely, when someone was asking if it was Lyra, for example, and my mom usually tells them that they called a wrong number. Even though there's one occasion when my mom wanted to call me but hearing someone else's voice instead.

And on one unique case, several years ago, a certain someone was wanting to top up the phone number, and turns out my number is almost similar to her number, and I was surprised when I suddenly got filled with the amount she added, and confused what to do with them. So she called me afterwards to send it back, and I did just that.

As someone who doesn't like talking on the phone in general, I just give it to my relatives and tell them to answer it. Yeah, I'm lazy like that.

It happens a lot to me, actually. My friends keeps phoning me from different numbers whenever she can't call me with her own phone. I told her to stop, because the whole ****ing neighborhood knows my number by now. >_>

I hate talking on the phone to begin with, so if it's a new, foreign number I just send it to voicemail.

....Or I hand the phone to my boyfriend, without any explanation. "Just answer it." It's more fun that way.

This happens to me. A lot.

For some reason, I keep on getting phone calls from people asking for prescription refills, the VA hospital or a doctor's office to make an appointment. There has to be some doctor in my town that has the near identical number as my home phone and people keep getting it wrong. Most of the time, I just don't pick up. But when the same number calls 10 times, that's when I pick up and tell them to bugger off.
