NEVER CHOOSE THE GRASS STARTER. LIKE, EVER.

Always thought it was unbalanced how amongst the starter types, Grass has many weaknesses and the other two don't have as many weaknesses.

I mean I feel they could have just made it that Electric could be weak to Fire with the logic of 'electronics do not function well when overheated' and then make it resist Water for whatever reason, and then that could be a less unbalanced trio. That's just what I think though.

I've been looking at this thread for a while and it's been hard to think of one, though I'm not sure how controversial of a take this is.

I don't think Pokemon following behind you matters at all.

Okay, I know lots of people love this addition and this is something I'd take some flack for saying something like this but I guess I've always thought pretty strongly about this since like I dunno, Gen V or VI?

HGSS are great games for a bunch of reasons but I always hear people say they're great because your Pokemon follow you, and I hear that most of the games afterwards are awful because they removed that feature. I never understood that? It's sort of just there for immersion and helping you bond with your Pokemon but in terms of actual gameplay mechanics I don't think the games are any different if they do or don't include them.
When we found out all these Pokemon had unused running/flying/etc. animations in Sun and Moon I remember a lot of people talking about it like it was the end of the world but whenever I play those games I never find myself thinking "Wow it's really a dealbreaker that I can't have my Primarina walk around with me" because the games are good enough for me to where I'm not wishing for things they don't include. Like, I'm satisfied enough with it, y'know? We had an option for Pokemon to run around in the overworld with us in BDSP but I don't think I ever heard a single soul talk about that feature in those games because people were busy talking about how those games were bad and rushed and everything. And I never found myself using the feature in SV where you can send your Pokemon out to run around and auto-battle unless it was required. Regardless of how good or bad the games are or if they allow you to send out your Pokemon on the overworld, I don't think it matters. But I think people just cry out about how good of a feature was, ignoring all of that. It's just another empty, meaningless bullet to load into the "This is why the new Pokemon game sucks" argument.

Okay, here's a really specific one I just thought of: I don't care if the quadrupedal Pokemon evolves into a bipedal Pokemon. I remember so many people got mad when Sprigatito's evolutions were bipedal and I was like "??? okay??" I don't see why people make such a big deal about it. (Though I will admit, Incineroar is a bit... jarring. I will make an exception in this case for Incineroar)

The Villa in Platinum (where you spend copious amounts of money to luxuriously furnish it) is awesome. It's my favorite in-game area in the entire franchise.

The Vs. Seeker is the best trainer rematch mechanism in the franchise, far superior to the Pokegear or Match Call.

Not a fan of the "super form" or "regional variants" introduced in later gens. I tend to ignore them when I play.

BD/SP are better than people give them credit for. Certainly better than HG/SS in my opinion.

However. Secret Bases in BD/SP are worse than in the originals since the ability to decorate them was replaced with boring Pokemon statues.

Cipher Admin Ein from Colosseum is my favorite Pokemon professor.

You already know my favorite protagonists in the franchise (Leaf and Serena). But my favorite random NPC trainer designs? 5th gen Lady and 8th gen Lass.

My favorite games are still the ones that focus more on exploration than linear story telling. There's a reason why I like gens 1-3 and 9 in particular. I don't need to feel like a hero in those games. I just think being allowed to mess around with the world is way more fun.

Unless we're counting Megas, I will always take Fearow over Pidgeot. Yeah, Pidgeotto is iconic as one of Ash's Pokémon, but Spearow starts out with a Flying move, evolves faster, and ends up being stronger than Pidgeot even in the long run. Last time I replayed Red, Fearow actually ended up being one of my team's heavy hitters alongside Clefable and Jolteon, and it also put in surprising amounts of work in Stadium.

I really hate the trend in recent generations (gen 7 and onwards) of the excessive amount of signature moves/abilities. I think every single Pokémon line in gen 7 has a signature move and/or signature ability. I don't know much about gen 8 or 9 since I never played any of those games (still don't have a Switch) but I feel like a lot of those Pokémon follow this trend too. I swear not every Pokemon has to have one of these to stand out. What ever happened to just plain old regular Pokémon? No signature moves or abilities, no overcomplicated gimmicks, just some plain old Pokémon. I'm not saying to stop making new signature moves and abilities entirely, but just please SIGNIFICANTLY limit the amount of them in future gens.

Correct. Found one or the other somewhere in every evolutionary line in Generation 7. (Confirms this trend continuing in Generation 8 and 9 too.) Handed a fair number of them to later Pokemon, however. Namely:

Abilities

• Stakeout to three different evolutionary lines
• Stamina to Archaludon
• Fluffy to two different evolutionary lines
• Queenly Majesty/Dazzling to Farigarif, just differently named.
• Corrosion to Glimmet/Glimmora
• Berserk to Galarian Moltres
• The four terrain surges to Rillaboom, Pincurchin, Indeedee, and Galarian Weezing

Moves

• Darkest Lariat: Sword/Shield TR for 19 other Pokemon
• Sparkling Aria: Egg move for Lapras
• Ice Hammer: Egg move for Tinkatink
• Pollen Puff: Sword/Shield TR and Scarlet/Violet TM for a handful of other Pokemon
• Solar Blade: Sword/Shield TR, Scarlet/Violet TM, and a level-up move for some
• Zing Zap: Egg move for Pincurchin

Potentially serves as a kind of testing grounds. Limits the fallout to a single Pokemon, if too powerful.

Probably does it to differentiate Pokemon too. Why make Mudsdale when you have Donphan and Hippowdon at home? How do you make a mono-Ground type feel unique, especially when the design has already been made? Becomes kind of difficult after making 809 Pokemon (now 1025). Think about all the mono-Water or Normal/Flying Pokemon.

(Note: Is not trying to change your mind, to be clear. Mostly wants to explain it. Will not say all the signature moves and abilities are without fault. Became a big source of powercreep in Generation 9, if not earlier.)
