2021 Gaming Challenge

Welcome to the 2021 Video Game Challenge!

It's the Reading Challenge (which you should also look into – taking breaks is important, and what better way to take a break than to read a book?) but with video games, basically. Post in here and let us know how many games you'd like to try and finish this year, and off you go!

A few guidelines to take note of:

- Everything counts. Visual novels, walking simulators, mobile, all those other controversial genres that many on the internet will sneer at: these are all video games, if you wish for them to count towards your list. If you don't, then don't include them. Your list, your rules!
- A game is finished when one of the following occurs:
1. You see the end credits.
2. Where this is not viable, you finish the main mode – for example, with rhythm games, this would be playing through every song, racing games it'd be doing every unlockable cup, etc. If you're ever unsure, ask away!
3. One of the above happens, and you're satisfied. Want to complete postgame content, trophies/achievements, or get 100% completion? Go for it! This is not required to count the game as finished, but nor is it discouraged.
4. Extra note: you do not need to see the "true" ending for games with branching pathways and multiple endings, just finishing it once and seeing the credits is enough.
- For games that have no end like Final Fantasy XIV and Genshin Impact, to name the two that are most relevant at the time: given the time investment involved in these games, significant patches (i.e. ones that provide new story content) released in 2021 count as one new game.
- Any story-based DLC/expansions released in 2021 can count as a game towards your list, as long as you finish the content they bring with them. If it was released before, it counts as postgame content if you choose to do it.
- Replays are fine, but the same game cannot be counted twice, unless you are playing different versions of that game - e.g. an original version and then a remake.

It is encouraged that you keep us all regularly updated with your progress! Post back here when you finish a game and give us a review of your experience with it! Maybe you could try keeping a Game Journal on the forum if you'd like to keep things separate too?

Hello, again :femme2:

I have a habit of sinking an ungodly number of hours into games but never finishing them so this will have to change

Put me down for 20 and I shall try my best!

For now I'll set my number at a reasonable 20, but I may bump that up depending how the year goes. :)

I apparently finished 34 games and pretty much the same number of runs in Pokémon games in 2020, so I think I should be able to do 50 games easily in 2021. Especially since I plan on playing shorter indie games.

I think I'll just set my goal as 5. I could probably do more without too much of a problem, but I'd rather not feel any time pressure in the slightest, so that sounds like a good number to me.

One question though: Do playthroughs that we started prior to 2021 count, or must it be that we didn't start until then?

Anything you start prior to 2021 counts too, as long as you finish it from Jan 1st onwards~

I'll participate in this. However, there'll be two more rules for me:

1. it's only going to be JRPGs
2. if I've already beaten the game before a replay will only count as 0.5 games

I'll be trying to beat 6 games.

Not counting Pokémon since I kinda set myself up for a lot of those, I think I can do 10.

There are a number of great games just sitting in my Steam library waiting for me to finish them - and some other classics I've been meaning to play but have yet to put in the time.

Going for one more than Tyler - a safe 7 games for me! I won't have much time for gaming when uni starts, but if I can finish more than this I will!

I'm gonna gun for at least 5 games to be completed I have plenty of games to do this as well. Though it will not be 100% runs, not a completionist type person. I might up the number if I get to five playthroughs before years end.

Looks like we're ready to go! Good luck to all of you with your goals for this year. To anyone who hasn't posted yet but was thinking of doing this - you can drop in at any time this year, and anything you've finished between now and the end of the year will count :3

Going to sneakily advertise the Game Along II, which is also running this year - if you're ever stuck for something to play or feel like doing something a bit different, any games you play for this will count towards your Gaming Challenge too!

As for me...I finished 80 games last year, although I probably could have done 100 if I'd made them shorter ones and not gotten bogged down in Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition...which I am still playing. So I'm going to aim for 50, which is what I've aimed for the last 3 years or so. I'll shift my goalposts if/when I get there.

[1/7]

I completed my first game for the year, VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartending Action! Since this is part of the Game-Along challenge as well, I'll post my review there instead.

To sum it up, though:
  • Fun until you realise it's not great in hindsight
  • Weirdly addictive for the first two thirds of the game
  • Dorothy creeps me out and should have been approached differently
  • Lovely art style makes the rather poor writing more forgivable
  • Characters were distinctive but I didn't care for most of them lol
  • Didn't like the constant in-your-face crude remarks
  • No replay value in my opinion
  • Needs more interactivity

Overall score: 5.5/10

I finished Star Wars: KotOR 2 today. You can read my whole playthrough in my Game Journal or just read my overall thoughts right here:

I think KotOR 2 still holds great to this day. It was able to present beautiful world just like its predecessor and fill it with interesting characters, even though I think first game had better cast of main crew. I wasn't particulary fond of Mira, HK-47, Disciple or G0-T0, but Kreia, Atton and Visa evened the odds. I hated almost every part where I had to play as anyone else than Exile, except for T3 parts. Those were fun. But Mira's parts were the most boring and annoying bits I've played in a long time. The game was also a lot easier than the first one. I only wiped 4 times in total IIRC and barely used any healing. I had 80+ healing items at the end of the game and never even felt like using any of it. And as I said before, there weren't really any opponent that would require more than 3 turns to beat. That includes whole Malachor except bossfights. And keep in mind that I had to solo Malachor and it was suppose to be this huge breeding ground of Sith. The game felt empty at times, which was propably because it was unfinished. Like Korriban or Dantooine had barely anything to do on them aside from the main quests. Still, this was that kind of game that I played every time I had a free time on my hands and had really hard time closing it once I was playing. Not many games had similar effect. And I'm not surprised. As I said, the KotOR universe is nice, battle system is great and story was captivating at times.

I decided to give all games a numerical rating ranging from 0 to 10. So after all I said, I give KotOR 2 7.5/10.

Next up is original Doom from 1993. Well, not exactly that version, because I'll be playing The Ultimate Doom from 1995 that has more maps in it. I only ever played the first Doom map and I've never even other levels, so this will be interesting.
