To be honest, I don't like using pencils at all. Something about them just… iffys me. ): Personally, I prefer pens over anything. If they're the erasable kind, then that's even better.
Since my junior year of high school, I have preferred writing in ink over pencil, but that's partially because my AP classes that year had teachers that preferred ink over pencil when it came to essays & such, and I just eventually got used to it. I began taking notes and doing all my non-math work in ink all throughout the year. And the same applied in my senior year as well.
I guess you were lucky in that situation.. in past years that I have had math teachers get OCD about using pens, they have usually said it aloud and if you used pen anyways there were no take-backs on any zeros for not following instructions of using a pencil only.Funny thing is, one time in high school, one of my math teachers gave me a zero for taking a test on ink. Eventually he retracted the zero and gave a "proper" grade. You could say it's my fault for not reading the syllabus, but that was mentioned in a middle of a long paragraph if I remember.

When I was in middle school, I was having trouble with a math problem once, and the teacher refused to help me because I was using a pen. xD" She did help eventually, but after she was done with helping three other kids.
oh my goodness that happened to me as well, and even in middle school too! My Algebra teacher was super strict in pen usage. He'll automatically give you a zero on your homework or classwork if you do it in pen, even if you have all the answers correct.
But... you're Canadian...I just do it in pencil all the time as a general rule of thumb. I know that if I do a test in pen, I'm bound to make mistakes, and with 99.9% of pens, they're unerasable. So if I do a math test in pen (which will be never), I'd have to be pretty damn confident in my math skills at the time.
