    I'm sure we've heard this phrase almost everywhere, even in kids commercials.

    For the older peeps, did you have to ask your parents to get on the internet when you were younger? Or were you, like me, a rebel and didn't need permission to do so?

    For the younger peeps, do you ask permission to use the internet at your home? Are your parents a bit strict as to how you use the internet wisely?
     
    I didn't had to ask my parents, but we only had a couple hours of internet per month so we could go when we wanted, but no more than 30 minutes per day (each. we were 3 kids)
     
    Never needed to ask for permission. Well I guess technically I did because they were busy using the phone line. #aolsuckshype
     
    In the old days of dial-up, I always had to ask first. My parents ran their business from home so they needed the phone line free nearly 24/7. Needless to say, up until I was about.. 12 or 13, maybe? internet time was pretty much reserved to doing homework.

    However, once we switched over to the incredible hyperspeed of 1.5 Mb dsl, everything was kosher and I didn't need to ask anymore... but then I didn't know what to do with it. :P
     
    haha i never asked permission all those creepy chat sites :( hahah but then again most times i just chatted online with real life friends since im kinda out in the bush area and cant just go visit whenever i wanted. or just played online games and not the uber scary / gory ones more like bubble trouble or some things lol
     
    I had to ask. My parents' computer was the only computer in the house at the time that had internet, and this was back when I was 8/9 years old too.

    I was 13 when I got my first ever laptop with internet connectivity (via wifi that is). I still had to ask my parents to join an internet forum because they didn't know how those worked and were worried about myself as a person identifying themselves on the internet.
     
    I don't think I asked about joining anything online since I was like 9. But using the internet before then was sort of a chore. AOL dial-up connection... *cringes*
     
    After the 64k modem I have never ever asked permission to use Internet.
     
    Not really. XD My parents didn't care what I did online, so long as I wasn't doing things I shouldn't doing. When I discovered the internet, they gave me the whole rundown of how I should be careful and yada yada. I didn't have to ask them for permission to do anything unless I was like... doing something they might not approve of. To be honest, my parents are pretty good about trusting me. They didn't feel the need to watch what I do or spy on me to make sure I was doing what they asked me to.

    When I got into online dating, they understood how much easier it was for me with my autism. They never questioned it and again, they enforced the whole 'be careful what you do' speech they made for me. It's funny because I feel like I have this sixth sense for knowing who's being who they say they are and who's not, you know? I don't know if it means anything though. It's just something I've noticed more as I've matured.
     
    When I was much, much younger--around eight years of age or so, if I remember right--there used to be only two computers in my home. One of them was a laptop, which was owned by my dad. He, unfortunately, wouldn't allow anyone to use it at all (aside from my mom from time to time, under certain circumstances), as it was very... his, so to speak. This is where he'd save all his important work documents and whatnot, so if anything went wrong, he'd have to be responsible for it all.

    As for second, this one was a desktop, which I was permitted to actually use. However, since it was more of a family-computer, my parents would limit me as to many hours I could use the thing. During weekends, it would be four hours at maximum, and during weekdays, it was only one. If I was lucky and my parents were busy with other things, they'd sometimes extend that limit to two.

    When I was around twelve, I finally got my own computer, which given as a birthday present. Since this was put into my room, I had complete access, and even if they'd disallow me from turning it on, I was still able to cheat out of my way by locking my door and whatnot, pretending as if I were actually doing my homework and don't want to be disturbed. It was indeed sort of a hassle, but still was able to get around regardless!
     
    I use my own internet that i pay myself so i don't need to ask them. But sometime when i'm out of money, i'm gonna hack into their wifi (without asking of course).
     
    Back when we had no internet access aside from my father's laptop, me and my brother can only use it for an hour a day.

    Back when we had internet access, we only had one desktop PC, I was the one to use the internet the most since my siblings don't really know what to do at the internet aside from homework. Let's say my grades fell I blame language differences more and I was temporarily blocked from a few sites. They're mostly forums + Youtube

    Back when we finally got WiFi at my house, there weren't a lot of PCs at our place. It wasn't until I got my laptop that it starts to function for what it's supposed to do other than providing WiFi for my DSLs. At this point, internet was 24/7. :v

    But then my father noticed that the four of us would sleep really late if the internet from the WiFi is still on, so he made it so that my WiFi will automatically shut off from the internet at 9... And then not that long after he did that he gave me 24/7 access to the internet for my laptop, since I tend to stay up late in order to do assignments that requires the internet and I blame my classmates for staying up so ****ing late.

    Right now I'm pretty much limited to a portable WiFi hotspot and my campus' WiFi. Gee, I hope that my campus doesn't monitor a lot. I mean, I have my entertainment needs. :v

    Nah, I never asked. When I would go on certain sites I never saw myself in need of parents' consult to visit them. We had more than one computer in our house most of the time, I usually used one meant for PC games and the like. Until we had our own laptops I didn't find myself asking.
     
    When I first got on the Internet, like forums and such... I think I was twelve or thirteen. I didn't ask permission. I just found myself on a Zelda forum.

    I wasn't really active on the computer/Internet much before that, so my behaviour and habits clearly changed. Noticeably so. So, my parents asked me what I was doing there so much now.

    I showed them the forum and they didn't really have a problem. I think a large part of that was that it was an official Nintendo forum, so that made it seem valid and safe in their eyes I think.
     
    I have never had to ask permission for anything computer-related. My parents are really stupid about computers and know next to nothing about the internet. They didn't understand a damn thing I was doing, and didn't really care to. They were so lax with me in those regards that I could basically access pornography at the age of ten. I did so when I was 11 by accident.

    But I liked it that way. Not because pornography, because I didn't understand what I was looking at (though it didn't really traumatize me any, I found it meaningless) and I've never been fond of it anyway, but because with that freedom, I was able to make many friends and actually have some enjoyment in my otherwise quite crap childhood. If they had known what I was doing... whew. I probably wouldn't be where I am today with a fiance I met off the internet! My mom is very paranoid about everything and has a tendency to throw panic attack fits, so even as a child, I realized it was best to keep her in the dark.
     
    I only had to ask permission back in the days of AOL and dial-up. AOL because we had to use a long-distance number to connect (so plenty of charges if not very careful with the time usage), and the dial-up for the reason of it taking up the phone line. Although it didn't help that there was only one computer in the house as well and if my parents needed to use it at all then nope the kids weren't touching it.

    (However, both my parents worked during the day around that time, so give us a summer vacation and there was plenty of internet usage while they were away. None of us were naughty/brave enough to visit questionable sites, though.)

    Once new computers were gotten (and the older one given to us kids, yay now we get to fight amongst ourselves for it), fewer and fewer craps were given about needing permission, haha. Especially once we got DSL - once we had that, I don't think any of us needed to ask to go online.
     
    I didn't really need permission but I also couldn't go online too late into the night because we had dial-up as a kid. The parents would be annoyed by the "screeching" and disconnect it. Nothing I could do about it, wah. So long as I went online only during certain hours of the day, I'd be fine.
     
    Another interesting question: What will you do with you kids? Will they have to get a permission before going online?

    I did not need permission bevor going online. But for a really long time (in the dial up days and in the first years of DSL) we had no Wifi, which means only the family computer in the living room had access to the internet. This meant I only could use it during daytime and in the evening (as well es in the morning on weekends) and because my parents work shifts very different there was nearly always someone who could see that I do only the things I was allowed to.
    Often my parents checked what I did on the internet and I did nothing I was forbidden but the feeling of being watched all the time alone annoyed me very much, which was the reason I did not use the Internet that much.
    This changed when we redecorated huge parts of our hours and I was allowed to put a Lan cable through the floor into my own room. From then on I could go online whenever I wanted without someone questioning it. By then I was already 15.

    With my own kids I think I will handle it differently. They will get to the internet was a much younger age (when I was under 10 years the internet did not provide anything interesting for a kid of my age) and when they do I will strictly accompany that. When they are in their later teenage years they should be able to know by themselves what is right.
