Skype for iOS sucks in general imo. I get the same problem. It sucks that there are no alternatives.

plus.im is a good alternative but it's browser only and it's a pain to use on mobile devices. And the app costs like $5 bucks >_<

It's a good idea to send contact requests to everyone involved in the chat, by the way :)

And is there a maximum number of group members or something?

I'm thinking of culling the list of chat participants about every Sunday night from now on. Take the chat, look for activity in the last four days, and remove anyone that didn't talk and didn't sign up recently.
