[Event] The PokeCommunity Game-Along VI: Return of the Gaming

OH HELL YEAH IT'S MY MONTH BABY!

Just to check @gimmepie what constitutes as completion for this? To use an example - Tiny Rogues doesn't necessarily have an endpoint other than like IDK getting all the classes or something, so would just finishing a run count as completing a game?

Or I guess a better example would be Slay the Spire - there is the goal of beating the Heart and doing the stuff for that, but single runs do normally roll credits even if you don't trigger the Heart fight.

I'm not an expert on Roguelikes, in honesty. So I'm willing to give some leeway for personal judgement. If you trigger the credits/end screen, that's good enough for me. If you judge more is needed though, that's fine too. If the game doesn't have traditional credits, you can count a run for this one because that is still a definite end.

Picks "Flame Over" for this month. Never gave it the time of day, for whatever reason. (Actual playtime: 3 minutes. Checked if it worked, if memory serves. Should have.) Glanced at some reviews quickly. Said it was tough. Will see if it is "completable" before the end of the month. Worst case scenario: Plans to play a round of Slay the Spire anyways later on this month.

Edit: Never mind. Already dislikes this in the tutorial section. Is not helped by using the mouse wheel to rotate the camera (which is not on this trackball mouse). Rebound it to C. Neh. Will figure out something else.

Edit: Going with "Dungeon Clawler".

It's been too long since I last played a space sim, so I'm going to pick Everspace.

Thanks - in that case I've had a really really busy gaming sesh recently (journal post to follow!) so I'll just go with Tiny Rogues.

I'll choose three random classes to do each of the final bosses with (Primal Death for Chaos, Amon for Evil and Eden for Good)

Completed one run of Dungeon Clawler as all 13(?) characters in the game. Seemed good enough for "completion". Did not fiddle with debt levels much (basically difficulty from 0 to 20). Unlocks them one after the other. Would have taken quite a while to chew through all of them.

Gives it a thumbs-up. Is not perfect, in terms of balance. Played with the idea well, though, between different types of claws and water mechanics. Wrote up a game journal entry about it.

I'm not super available this month and rogue-likes aren't really my thing? I try really hard to not replay games for these but I think the only thing I'd comfortably want to and be able to do as a challenge for this month is to revisit Yohane the Parhelion: Numazu in the Mirage and complete a run.

It has been done! At first I tried my best to go with a Dia-themed run (using her costume, getting as many of her charms and cards as I could, etc.) but that idea fell through about halfway into the run. What I actually did was a build focused on applying defense down and then using cards like Acrobat or Hell Zone to regain energy, and cards like Alright or Take it easy and rest combined with a lot of Fade cards to draw extra cards for no cost and just unload into whatever I fought. Bosses were Chika, Riko, and You in that order so I didn't have too tough of a time. I'm really sad I didn't get a single Dia summon the entire run but a Laelaps summon helped at one point and Riko really helped, though I don't think it ever got to a point where I needed summons like Hanamaru and Mari (who I just kept in my hand) to survive.
This was more of an opportunity to revisit Reverse Numazu than it was to actually develop new strategies or try something different, but it gave me a good opportunity to really try out Boost cards, with the highlight being a Furious Demon Maru being boosted from 30 damage to 150 throughout a single turn. When energy repleneshing builds work, they work.

I heard Into the Breach was good.

I beat my game (D.A.R - Deadly Alien Rogues, a Space Invaders flavour of roguelike) with a new character (Pocomagi - they had a cute hat!) Stuck with their default choice of rockets and buffed that up. Penetration buff also allowed me to hit enemies behind others so that was quite useful in clearing things, as well as only needing to beat three of a type for a Special attack rather than the usual four. But the end was probably only made possible thanks to Bullet Bunkers and other buffs for those barriers like sometimes gaining health - they would sometimes be able to clear a wave for me while I hid. Necessary as the last two levels were getting intense...

Okay, so. I've seen the credits of Blue Prince by accomplishing the main/initial goal and I'm gonna say, at 30 hours, that that means I've beaten it.

What we will not take into consideration is the fact that apparently I'm only 10% of the way through the game what the actual f-

Did my run of The Binding of Isaac today since FF14's under maintenance... >.>
Overall it took 3 tries to make it to credits, but then again I'm rusty as all hell lol. Managed to get to heaven on my 3rd run though, which was neat.

I beat one run of Monster Train. And I mean it literally. I won on my very first run (outside tutorial). I suppose that means this month's challenge is "done," but let's be honest, it would be quite lame to be done with a rogue-like game only after one run. I'm certainly continuing on with the game, at least until I beat the game using every clan.

I beat a run of Everspace, piloting an Interceptor. I enjoy the game, but it's a little repetitive. I don't expect to get the true ending before the month ends, so one run will have to do.

Finished Tiny Rogues! I technically did do this challenge like 90 times over, but wanted to do the thing I specifically mentioned I would.

As usual, I had a blast! I love this game and I heavily recommend any roguelikte fans check it out.

For our Good run, the class picked was the Deprived. This is a really cool class - basically for each point of Curse (a stat which affects a few things such as reducing rewards, lowering your chance of on-attack triggers and stuff) your stats get a % boost based on how much Curse you have. Your special ability can also turn any door rewards into Cursed ones, so you have a reliable way of building up some Curse. This run went really well - I managed to get a nice accessory which increased the damage of any Cursed hits by a % based on how much money I had. This was coupled with a very cool offensive setup: basically each time I hit an enemy, it would trigger damage based on however many DoT ticks I had on the enemy. This paired with a Poison weapon (Poison stacks infinitely) meant that after a few hits, I was hitting enemies for upwards of 10 stacks of Poison on top of any existing damage. Needless to say, the final boss Eden went down VERY quickly.

For our Evil run, the Magician was our class. Magicians are a bit more basic - they get +1 Mana every other level and their unique ability creates a glyph on the floor, boosting your damage by 1.4x the number of Mana containers you have whilst inside it. This was a run that was incredibly on flavour. My first trait allowed me to fire off a random wand or staff weapon in my inventory every second. Not too far in, I had an AoE lightning weapon as my main weapon and a slow but powerful lightning weapon (that generated lots of chain lightning effects) in my inventory. This meant its slowness was bypassed as it was attacking every second, and it means a lot of AoE lightning damage! Then I managed to get an armour set which increased all lightning damage AND increased the maximum number of Shock (ailment caused by lightning damage) stacks.

I then got another two traits which comboed INCREDIBLY well with my setup - one let me do a burst of lightning damage when an enemy reached max stacks of Shock whilst the other repeated any lightning damage on an enemy. So Amon the final boss melted incredibly quickly as well.

For our last run, Lawful, the Cyborg was our class. This class is a weird one. It doesn't really focus on anything, but it has some cool things going for it. The special ability is a barrage of missiles over a few seconds, each dealing Explosive damage (and therefore something you can build around). The class itself gives any weapon upgrade levels based on all of your stats, so instead of the maximum of +4, your weapons can essentially infinitely scale. The starting equipment is based around Energy damage, giving you a Companion that does Energy damage; a helmet which increases Energy damage and gloves which trigger an Energy-based attack every few attacks.

HOWEVER I basically ignored all that and instead had a very fragmented run. It wasn't really setting up for much for the majority of it, but towards the end I got an armour set which increased my dexterity by a lot and also increased my ailments effectiveness by quite a bit, which went well with our Aurora Scroll we got. This was a bit slower than the other runs, BUT we still managed to beat Primal Death and therefore achieve victory over the three bosses, yay!

July: Speed Run

It's been a hectic month or two. Everything always on the move. Everything frantic. Not to mention the Get-Together is right around the corner. It's time to embrace the kinetic chaos of that high speed lifestyle and game accordingly. Don't panic though, I'm not actually making you speed run. I would probably die. It's actually the return of the short games theme.

For July you must complete a game with an average playtime of 10 hours or less.

Another nice theme, since I've got a decent bit of a time crunch on my hands... I'm a bit sad this isn't specifically to speedrun a game, and my own self-inflicted challenge to only play games I've never finished. When I think of a game I'd speed run I think of Pokemon Platinum but Castlevania Aria of Sorrow is a close second, and I'd like to right my wrong from a couple months ago of not finishing a game I had started playing but never finished, so...

All this rambling is to say, it's time for me to play Super Castlevania IV this month.
