Idle thought: Are "dog" and "cat" short words because of children? Learns to speak simplified versions of "Mother" and "Father" first often. Makes sense to learn other family members next. Probably not, though? Falls apart a bit with "brother" and "sister". Never heard a baby say "bro" or "sis".
