Easily Penny, as I dislike the pushy battle-junky, and although I did like the story of Arven helping his doggo recover, I don't care much for him otherwise.

I'd definitely make it possible to decline friendship and rivalry with the battle junky 😙
I kept picking the No option every time, but just like always declining is sadly not an option 😔

This. I thought I was gonna like Nemona, but the "takes you under your wing because she knows more than you do and then makes it so that you can't say no without her kicking up a fuss" aspect of her character was a massive turn-off, not to mention kind of triggering. Let's just say I was "friends" with a person like her for a long time (the quotation marks are there because there's no way I would consider them a real friend now) and I'm still dealing with the aftermath of it. I don't outright hate Nemona and I respect those who believe she means well despite her pushy attitude, but I don't see her in that good of a light either due to my past experiences.

Penny is an interesting look at the effects of school bullying and I can relate to her somewhat on her avoidance of conflict and nerdiness... except that I don't have the same manipulative edge that she does. I mean, she basically railroaded the player character into cleaning up her own messes! I don't think her bullying even begins to justify what she did, and I'm still a bit ticked off that the Star Bosses forgave her so easily, let alone that she's considered a friend to the player character in the post-game. Again, I was also close to a person (different from the one above) like this once, and leaving them behind felt like a weight off my chest.

That leaves me with Arven, whom I have... mixed feelings about, to say the least. I'm not going to vote for any of the three "friends," but if I did, I'd likely go with him. He is the only one of the three that develops along his storyline and the most pleasant to be around once he opens up to you, but putting up with his initial haughty attitude and disdain of your 'Raidon is... a doozy. Looking back after the ending, there's also a very high chance that the apple will not have fallen very far from the tree - and considering how much I hate both of his parents, it makes me not want to get too attached to him. I'm thinking that perhaps I'm being more lenient with him because I watched a playthrough of the game, but if I actually did play it myself, I might have given up on him as soon as he scoffed at Miraidon. No one messes with my cyborg dragon baby.

To sum up... none of them convinced me. That "treasured friends" Tauroscrap with the picture in your dorm died in Area Zero for all I care. Give me a picture with my Mons!

I have to go with Nemona. I've always wanted a female main rival that actually loves battling. She can be annoying and maybe was a little bit over the top, but I think she was great.

Arveyn is a close second. If he had be a little nicer near the start, perhaps I would have liked him, but then again we figure out why he is the way he is. I enjoyed his story the most.

Penny, I didn't really like. It didn't make any sense for her to be leader and creator of Team Star. She was the character's main age and they made it seem like Team Star has been around for at least a few years. It would have made more sense for the Principle to be the leader when he was younger because of bullying and he just wanted to get them together, but got out of hand. So it would have made sense for him to want to change their path. If they hadn't made Penny seem like a new person in school or maybe even aged her up a few years to be on par with Nemona, maybe I would have liked her a bit more, but none of Team Star even knew her until the end.
 
I loved Nemona. She might be my favorite character in the entire franchise. I love her personality and the fact that she is always ready to battle. I also love what they did with her storyline too. She's both your rival and, technically, the strongest trainer in the region at the same time. If she was real, we would be best friends easily. We would get along so well and I know it. Lol As for Arven, I didn't really care for him. I thought his personality was off-putting at many points. He comes off as arrogant and his friendship didn't feel as genuine as the one with Nemona. I felt like he was just using me to achieve his goals than actually being my friend. I also hated the way he treated the Raidon throughout his storyline. Why yell at a Pokémon for wanting food? They tried to make him "likable" by giving him a sad storyline, such as wanting to help his Mabosstiff get better and undergo the whole story involving his parents. It didn't make me like him more. My feelings on him were neutral. I didn't like him or hate him. If he were real, I'd probably just wave and keep walking. As for Penny, I really hated her. She was just annoying and her personality was horrible. She really brought the mood down the entire time and I hated the fact that she had to come along to Area Zero. She was very snarky, hateful, rude, and I just didn't like her. If she was real, I would avoid her at all costs. In fact, at worse, we might even fight if she got too smart mouthed with me. lol I'd ask for Ghetsis to adopt me before I befriend Penny.
 
They all had moments where they got on my nerves, but I didn't dislike any of them.

I do wish Arven had nicknamed his pokemon though, it kind of felt like he was just calling his dog 'Dog'.

I didn't mind penny's occasional abrasiveness, (and I loved the Eevee bag) I just think there were times that she could've turned it down a bit.

I liked Nemona a lot! (VERY Goku though) However, I do wish they'd have let you make it more clear that battling wasn't that important to you.
(if whoever was playing the game felt that way of course) Kind of like a 'I'll cheer you on from the sidelines buddy!' option.

But of the three, Penny was my favorite.
 
Arven. Has a decent back story, character development, a conflict that makes sense when you find things out, and a personal goal that isn't your typical Pokémon stuff. Wish the franchise had more characters like him.

Penny is interesting, but the Team Star plot lost me at some point, it has an interesting foundation but I think the cartoonish execution made it fail.

Nemona is yet another Please be my rival I wanna be the strongest with no depth. Nothing new under the sun, well at least I don't remember if the game ever explains why she wants to be strong.
 
I couldn't care less for Penny. Her storyline was really weak and she felt like Mary Sue at times with her whole "I just hacked the world's biggest organizations in 5 seconds to get info we need to progress the story" stuff.

Nemona was great. It was nice change from goody two-shoes pushovers from previous generations. She still had positive vibe to her, but I liked her twist of being one of the strongest trainer in the region.

Arven had the most interesting story and at times felt like the main character. I wasn't his fan at first, but it took 2 Titan Pokémon to change my view of him. I think the most work went into him and he doesn't feel lile afterthought like Penny or like character just to check boxes like Nemona.
