5th Gen Why was Gen 5 hated so much?

Less to do with the hatred going away, but people growing up with gen 5 becoming more vocal.

It's likely to happen to future generations as well. People are fond of what they grow up with.

Ignore this now, things were explained to me. See later comments where the original was quoted to see it's original contents.

I'm still tired of these types of threads, especially since I know they can be prevented with research.

I'm sorry if any of my posts here made me seem like some kind of rabid fan (even though this generation admittedly (and unfortunately) has many of those) and I do not intend to cause debates over opinions. I seem to have more or less misunderstood a previous user's post, and after it was explained, I believe the point was driven home. I shall try to avoid incidents like this.

Also, if you don't like this generation, or even better, have nothing fucking good to contribute, why are you here?

And to answer this thread's question, it's fucking late by god knows how many years. Everyone likes this generation now, myself included.

And again, nobody can stop me from liking this generation. Nobody. I don't know what that user's problem was because I wasn't even actually insulting other users.

I'm honestly sick of these "Why do so many people not like this generation" threads in general. Sick to my stomach even. These questions can easily be answered by fucking research, and almost all the generations people have made a thread out of literally aren't bashed anymore, or at all even.
Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. Some people like the games others do not. Both are valid in their own right and need to be respected regardless of whether you agree or not. There is no reason to get heated over something like that, so let's calm down!

I like Gen V too. I only played Gen III-V, and I still replay them 10 years later. It was a joke about the tone of the internet…which you have confirmed for me

I would guess it's the fact that it was a soft reboot and people didn't really like the look of some of the Pokémon, even though they weren't really any better in Gen One. Personally I never had any strong feelings one way or the other when it came out. I thought it was fun, but I didn't absolutely love it or absolutely hate it.

Well if you ask me I thought of it as a side reigon like orange islands or battle frontier (same for Alola lol !) But when I played it then I came to know that it was main series reigon and even if it is advanced in technology it still have another side which is full of myths and secrets what I thought is now that maybe it lacked because of the previous sinnoh reigon as it have legendaries who were like God themselves and after that mega evolution came with new kalos reigon so it got sandwiched between them and forgot
Also the game graphics of d/p/pl were made much better and also maybe people were crazy after dialga ,palkia, giratina and arceus

Mew: gen 5 was the first generation we really followed the release of and every generation release after that felt kind of lackluster, gen5 redid everything and really set itself apart whereas a lot of other generations can blend together especially if you weren't actively playing during them. I think its been long enough now that most people can look back on it and I remember really, really enjoying the games. The biggest controversy I remember when the games were released were people disliking the new Pokemon designs.

tbh every generation has had a controversial release, except for 1 and 2 and I can't remember everything from 4. Gen 3 actually was similar with being a soft reboot, but that was because there wasn't backwards compatibility and that was why the first remakes were made.

I hated gen 5 mainly for its bad designed pokemon. Matter of taste, I know. Now it's in my third favorite generation, but it's just because of the story and characters. For the rest, I am not a fan of gen 5, but for my personal taste. I am talking about the music, most of the region, the graphic style and basically 95% of the new pokemon created lol. This is now. Back to when I was a child, I could understand the story but not in its depth but tbh this happens with many pokemon games u re-play as an adult. Anyway, I really really hated the new pokemon designs. if now i hate like 95% of them, back to when i was a child it was like 98% at least lol. I didn't evolve my oshawott, that i didn't like, in Sammurrott cuz I hated they way it looks lol. Same with the graphic style tbh. Despite it was a new pokemon game, I still headed back to play pokemon diamond or soulsilver, because I preferred the style and the region. I m talking considering my experience, but in general I would say gen 5 was different than others, so many people couldn't appreciate it at all. I m fair, i didn't appreciate it when it came out and I don't appreciate it for the most even now, except for the story. I think that the reception of gen 5 was somewhat important for gen 6, that imo was the input for modern pokemon games. (not a compliment. Can be either good or bad, depends on u. imo, it wasn't)

I did notice quite a few people were iffy about gen 5 at first, mostly because of the few Pokémon designs we saw + the fact that you couldn't catch any old Pokémon? Though BW2 changed the latter. Even I was unsure at the beginning lol, though I did mostly like it thanks to really liking Cilan from the anime back when trailers for that were airing. Majority of those people I know who were more vocal about being unsure ended up loving it a lot and it's now one of their favorite generations. I mean, the story really shone and was one of the best if not the best we've ever had. <3 So I'm glad things turned out more positively in the end. Unova is a treasure.

But yeah, everyone is different. It definitely sticks out a bit in graphics style and the entire feel of the game is 'darker' to me (in a good way). I'm worried about the eventual remake, since I'm not sure they can recapture that same feeling it gave me.

I never hated it. It wasn't my favorite game ever (that's Sun/Moon), but I certainly didn't hate it. I never realized that some people really did hate it.
The hate for Gen 5 was a lot more visible around the time of its release and for a few years after. Over time some people's views of it softened a bit, and since it's not the shiny new thing anymore it's not talked about as much, so you're naturally going to hear less of everything about it.

Every generation is always someone's favorite and least favorite anyway.

I mostly see gen 5 in a similar light as confused piplup, although hating 95% of the Pokemon is a bit much lol. I played through all of the games as a kid and teen in order, so by the time gen 5 came around, I had seen it all and was sick of the style and formula. It was the same old 2D look from gen 1 essentially and I didn't care for most Pokemon, and going through the motions of routes, gym leaders, league, etc felt so contrived. I remember being disappointed by another mere 8 badges and measly post-game. It didn't help that I didn't (and still don't) really care for the region.

I do recall enjoying the story though even during my first playthrough, so that kept me going. But it was the first Pokemon game that I kinda forced myself to finish. Gen 6 was a breath of fresh air for me; the graphical update probably had an even bigger impact than it should've, but I loved it. Gen 5 to me, while not terrible, will forever epitomize milking a franchise, so idk that I'll ever like it much. With that said, it seems that whenever I heard about gen 5 in recent years, it's always incredible praise, rather than hatred as the post mentions. It's really odd to me and nothing about the game really deserves praise except for the story and some of the music. Still better than SwSh tho.

For me alot of these pokemon look weird. Pick any previous gen, hell pick ANY gen of starters and compare how they look to snivy, tepig, and oshawatt. Snivy loses its arms. Emboar is ANOTHER fire fighting type, and after the first two fire fighting starters, its got alot to live up to and fails misreably. Samurott is not terrible but its still not as cool as Blastoise Feraligatr or marshstomp. Amoongus has a pokeball thing on its head. Alomamola is a heart fish thing. Chandulure is a chandelier. Cryogonal is an angry snow flake. Watchhog is the ugliest pokemon in existence. It is looking at you like your gf or wife as if did something wrong "again". Unfezent, i dont even know what im looking at. Swoobat has hearts in its pupil. Siesmitoad is an overweight frog with skinny legs and what looks like cancerous growths on its body. Leavanny is the reason why Jynx, and the Nidoueen line shouldnt look at female pokemon magazines. Female Pokemon gets depressed because its not as skinny as Leavanny. Scrafty is always pulling it pants up. Wear a belt for crying out loud! You might be more useful in battle if you didnt have to stop and pull your pants up!

Whirlepede looks like a car tire. Sigilyph...yep. Garbodor is literally a pile of garbage. Gothitelle is a gothic pokemon which was totally a 2000s tread. Vanite is literally ice cream. And since Pokemon like to add a the same pokemon and call it an evolved form they just added scoops and said, here is your evolved form! Klinglang is a bunch of gears. Cubchoo has frozen snot that moves. Is this supposed to be cool??? Beartic has 3 frozen spikes but for some reason I think its just snot that was still frozen when it evolved. Accelgor looks like something stuck in a caccoon. Excavalier looks like it should be the next stage. Stunfisk is a fish that was stepped on. Mienshao has what looks like whips for hands. Golurk again i have no idea what this is supposed to be. A grandfather clock? Emolga is another pikachu rip off and vullaby is a togepi rip off. Heatmor, i have no idea. An ant eater? Durant is a giant ant. In real world, how would one kill a Durant infestation? Hydregion has its own face for hands. Genesect is just stupid compared to the other final legendary pokemon. Elektross i have no idea again.

Now dont get me wrong. There are SOME cool one, Haxorus, Victini, Scolipede, Zoroark, Manidbuzz, and Darmanitan. Oh yeah, Damanitan Z. Looks cool but useless.

Like, I can see why people who start in gen 5 think its the best. They look at the other gens mons and say, "These pokemon aren't weird enough..."

Agree on all of this - except that I think Tepig is adorable, all three starters' 2nd evo sucks but I really like Emboar actually (except for its typing). Unfezant looks waaay worse than an actual real life pheasant whereas normally Pokémon look cooler than real life. Cubchoo and Beartic's Pokédex entries ruined them - otherwise they were well thought-out Pokémon (especially giving them Swift Swim, although I think they should be faster to start with as Polar Bears irl are faster on land, and Ice is a weak typing so they wouldn't be OP). Heatmor's ugliness is accurate to real life...one of the few designs I actually hate.

I disagree with most of your post that I didn't quote, but if I wanted to argue with a stranger I'd go on social media!

Hated perhaps by some, but in the "favorite generation thread", Gen 5 is actually winning ;)

for me personally, it's one of the top games. it left a lasting impression even though I had to play in German and understood barely anything. the music is pleasing, N is a memorable rival, graphics are perhaps the best colored graphics Pokemon ever got, and I like designs, along with the fact it forces me to create a brand new team.
I know some people dislike both the designs and the absence of other gen mons before post-game. maybe they dislike thinking too much about such deep problems too? :p

I'm one such person who didn't quite dig it at first. I was a bit disconcerted by the fact that the Unova Dex consisted of entirely new Pokémon, with older Pokémon only available after the main story. It was a bold decision, and by no means the wrong decision, but it had me (and presumably others) feeling a bit alienated during my playthrough. And when I finally did have access to the postgame, I think the level-jump was a bit too severe, at least for my team at the time. Having come from HGSS' nebulous content and the longevity of the Battle Frontier, Black and White's postgame (while good!), didn't live up to its predecessors - and really, it wasn't fair to expect it to.

Gen 5 introduced some incredible features (reusable TMs, anyone?), great graphics, music, and easily the strongest story we'd ever seen. And then it broke tradition further, by giving us sequels as the "enhanced edition".
Seriously, B2W2 have so much content, it's amazing to me. It feels like a ROM hack of original BW, with everything great from the originals and much more crammed in there.

While I didn't fully appreciate gen 5 at the time, having played through it again this past year, I loved it, and got a much fuller sense of what it had to offer the series. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't played it in a long time.

There was a combination of factors working there to make the bad reactions. Here are some I remember:

- It was hyped, while nowadays it's kinda fashionable to hope for the worse with new releases, BW had some hype going for it. For the first time, we were going to have a Pokémon game with a different art direction (omg, N has a portrait when talking to the player), more advanced graphics (look at this panoramic shot of Skyarrow Bridge!) and we're going to have a more nuanced story with shades of gray (Pokemon PETA)! Then reality came and it wasn't as exciting as people thought it would be.

- The soft reboot and general lack of options in the early game didn't help. For the first two gyms or so you had way too little options to use for Pokemon.

- The new EXP curve made anything short of Audino grinding painful.

- They removed series staples (at the time) like the Game Corner and the Safari Zone and didn't put anything in its place like Voltorb Flip, or they put some other series staples like the Department Store on the post game.

- HGSS had Pokemon following you, which was an almost universally loved mechanic. BW dropped that. HGSS had the Pokéthlon and the Battle Frontier which helped with farming some items and just extending game longevity, BW dropped the Pokéthlon putting Musicals (which were seen as meh at best by a large chunk of people) and went back to a Battle Tower like until BW2.

- The usuals: design hate, localization drama (remember that back in the day, Japanese versions came out way before the rest of the world, so a lot of people got used to Japanese names or fan translations before the official names came out).

Now that time has past, some of the good points are being more appreciated and some of the bad points are being ignored or seen as "better than what came after" so BW is mostly seen as a Good Game Actually™️ by the fandom nowadays.

With that all said, I think it's important to keep in mind that your average Pokemon player doesn't go out of their way to comment on forums or Twitter or whatever and just ... play the game. Most people probably liked it fine or didn't think it was great but didn't hate it either (as is the case with Sword and Shield, or BDSP the games that are fashionable to dislike right now).

Internet Discourse is often skewed by the hardcore fans who are lot more emotionally invested in the franchise and isn't necessarily representative of the wider audience.

I came straight from playing Platinum and HGSS as a kid and I loved it. Graphics were a step up and a whole bunch of new pokemon were a huge appeal to me. Don't really understand why any would have hated it, unless we're talking about W2B2 which i can understand might have been a disappointment to some people (not for gameplay reasons, but because it was so close to the end of the DS lifespan).

..It is? Damn, I must have missed that boat.

Though I'm sure if you go back in my post history you'd probably find some strong opinions on something - I can't really say for sure that it's the most hated! Not in my opinion at least, and certainly not when you had a large on & offline group to play with.
