Crystal.

It doesn't have a great dex and it's obviously not the most up to date. It has a comfortable and soothing art style to me though.

how could you do this to me Sapphire. It's my first ever Pokemon game and I'd be too heartbroken if I couldn't ever play it again. But I love every Pokemon game I've played so much that I'd still be extremely sad about losing the rest.

I put Serena on the side of my truck in American Truck Simulator, so that means it counts as a Pokemon game, right?

... My attorneys have informed me that it does not, so I guess I'll go with

Leaf Green

It's the best of the remake games by a large margin, has a pretty good selection of Pokemon, plus my favorite character is in it.

(speaking of which, I should really get around to putting her on the side of a big rig too lol)

Probably Sword. Thinks in terms of challenge variation. Accesses a lot of Pokemon at reasonable levels with the DLC. Pulls anything higher-level from an alternate save file easily. Cannot do that with one game of Moon. Considered Ultra instead. Means battling Necrozma every time.

Would eventually get annoyed at the level curve and prevalence of Headbutt in something like Crystal.

Hm. Actually, maybe Shield. Never played it. Fixes the heavy physical lean in Sword's gyms. (Stomps so many things with Body Press strategies.) Loses out on Sirfetch'd, as a negative.

Platinum is my favourite game of all time, and I've already played it a ton, what's 40 or so more playthroughs?~
I would miss getting to play other games, and if I wasn't stubborn about having a Gen IV bias, I'd probably heavily consider B2/W2, but oh well, such is my heart.

Shield. (with a mod that lets me keep the full Pokedex up to this Gen, please... >.>) I loved getting the chance to play as the closest thing to 'me' I'll ever put in fiction, and I had a great time with Shield. Though my biggest (and only real) complaint with it is the loss of the full Dex.

Oooh this is tough, I have a ton of nostalgia for SoulSilver and White 2, and both are fantastic games; but I have to give the slightest edge to W2. SoulSilver still has a bit of Gen 2 jank with a questionable level curve and a super boring early game while White 2 is basically perfect in almost every way. Amazing graphics for the DS, loads of Pokemon available, a really good difficulty curve, tons of side things to do. It's basically all the best aspects of Pokemon rolled into 1 game.

Torn with PMD Explorers and PMD Gates both i really like will side with Gates 'cause of QoL stuff like better moves menu

Simply because of having the most pleasing game mechanics as well as having multiple things I can easily sink many hours into: Sword/Shield.
Shield is my most played Pokemon game due to all the shiny breeding I did. Dynamax Adventures also received a lot of attention from me.
Never cared much for normal raids, on the other hand.

I think I'd go with Gold solely because I like the atmosphere so much, but it'd probably make me go insane after a while. The variety in both challenge and pokemon is nonexistent and only ever hearing 8bit sounds might make some serious damage to some part of my brain lol. In retrospect, It'd be better to go with either Black or White, which I also like but would be fun for longer.

If we're unable to transfer our Pokémon first, probably Scarlet since most of my most cherished Shinies are on that game atm. Which is kind of a bummer since I can't play it while multitasking.

If we got one final chance to transfer before dropping everything else, probably Sword. Not my fave, but most of my most cherished 'mon can be transferred in and I can play it while multitasking, unlike SV and Arceus. Plenty of Shinies to hunt too and it's easier to spot out those 1/65536's. ORAS if we were somehow able to transfer our Pokémon to older gens, at least as far back as the game they were originally caught in, so I could use Mothim too (no HGSS since my Flareon was caught in X).

In the event that we were forced to start from scratch, probably Crystal. Smaller roster than most options, but I adore the Gen. II aesthetic and find those early animations really neat (especially since I experienced the static sprites of Silver as a kid). Virtual Console version so we can avoid that whole dry battery thing.
