Why do dogs have such a keen sense of smell?

That's because one of their ancestors was the same ancestor to canari birds. So when evolution went on they had to decide: either grow more legs but keep the sense of smell or stay birds and be used in coal mines to sniff out gas. Since they didn't want the latter they grew new legs as quick as possible to run as far away from the mines as they could.
