    What is your native language?

Do you speak any other languages and if so what are they and how well?

What languages would you most like to learn how to speak and why?

    -My native language is English.

-I speak conversational level Mandarin Chinese and I'm still learning/practising now.

-In the future I would like to learn Arabic. I find the language interesting and I may end up going to the Middle East for work and or study at some point.

I'd also love to learn Finnish, Swahili, Amharic, Somali, Japanese, German, Spanish (...I could go on...) but unfortunately I wasn't born to be a polyglot!

    Native English

I took French in High School, but admittedly didn't take the class seriously. (Like the majority of my senior year classes). :/

But I'd love to return and learn the language in the future.

English is the only language I legitimately know.

Learning another language always sounded like a good skill to have to me, but there's little incentive for me to learn one (and to a satisfactory degree) and it gets harder to the older you get for most people....and I'm not getting any younger here.

My native language is also Dutch. I speak English fluently and I speak a little bit of French (Still in class for this!!)

I would love to learn Spanish and Japanese though.

Would you count computer languages into this question? If so, I am currently learning C++, though this is taking a bit longer than wanted.

Otherwise, I only know 'American' English, which is also my 'native' language. Goes without saying (but am anyway) that I am not as cultured as I would like to be.

Español is my native language c; Up until I was ten I was in a bilingual-teaching school. Thus I was placed in classes for Spanish speakers who were learning English. As a result I can not only speak it, but write and read in Spanish.

While my writing is rather rusty since we moved to Florida over a decade ago (i have yet to use it other than the occasional acquaintance who prefers to or only writes in such)

Also fluent in English. For the longest I've wanted to learn a different language. French or Japanese, the former of which I took in high school.

I only know english ): I used to study Spanish, and be pretty good at it, but that was like 7 years ago haha. I'd probably want to learn Japanese, as my boyfriend is trying to learn it as well.

Russian is my native language, as a Russian-born girl whose parents speak Russian at home! Though I moved to the US when I was 7/8 and have therefore been much more exposed to English, so it's my language of choice. I feel I can express myself much better when speaking English.

I can understand and speak minor Japanese, but nowhere near enough to get by. Can also understand minor French from taking three semesters in uni. =) Would like to improve my skills in both of those languages eventually!! They're some of my favorites.

This reminds me of something interesting my old roommate said. He moved from Germany to Sweden when he was about a similar age to you. He feels his Swedish is much better than his German but did worry about forgetting his Swedish the more time he spent outside of Sweden and was primarily using English, yet didn't have the same worries for German (I guess from it being his native language) even though he would say Swedish is his preferred language of choice.

Say if you found yourself in a situation that required you to rely on a hypothetical third language of yours for an extended period of time would you worry more about your Russian or your English slipping?

Definitely the Russian. It's already slipping a bit since I only use it at home with parents, meanwhile I have many people I talk to in English on a consistent basis, both irl and online. Plus I have PC which is an English-speaking community haha. :<

That makes sense to me. So it confused me why my roommate was more worried about losing his Swedish than his German but everyone is different!

I'm a little scared about what's going to happen to my Mandarin when I leave China.

English is the only language I can comfortably communicate in.

There's a list of ones I would like to learn, or am currently trying to learn. I'm looking at Japanese and French at the moment, the former because it always fascinated me a a kid (blame anime), the latter because I did learn some of it before and can actually still read/understand basic sentences. And then I keep telling myself I should learn Spanish in case I ever need to use it. Eventually I'll get to that.

    English!
French was mandatory in school but my high school french teachers ruined my interest in it.

    English!

Do you speak any other languages and if so, what are they and how well?

    1. French - C2
    2. Spanish - A2 + Passive bilingualism

What languages would you most like to learn how to speak and why?

Not speak, but understand. I'm interested specifically in Japanese for this reason. I have no need to read, write nor speak; just oral comprehension. Reading may come in handy down the line, but isn't a realistic goal at this point in my life.

Luckily, there are a ton of sinophones outside of China, so you may be better off than someone whose first language is Swedish, Finnish, Catalan, etc.
