Up until Gen. V, every main Pokemon game featured at least one Game Corner. In all of them (with the exception of non-Japanese copies of HGSS), you could buy coins (or receive them from people and find ones on the ground) and use those to play various casino games, such as slots, roulette (RSE only), and card flip (GSC only). In non-Japanese copies of HGSS, you got to play Voltorb Flip, which required no coins to play. With these coins, you could win prizes ranging from held items to TMs to Secret Base items to Pokemon!

Which region's Game Corner is your favorite, and why? Which is your least favorite? Which version of the slots did you like the most? If you could design your own Game Corner, what types of games and prizes would you put in it? Were you disappointed that BW and on no longer have Game Corners?

I really enjoyed that roulette game from Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, personally. It offered something different; wasn't same as slot machines. Slots are great, but they could get quite boring after a while. One thing that intrigues me about them is hitting jackpots; once you manage, you'll be wrecking up with gazillions of coins instantly. They're pretty tough to get a hold of, though, unless you pay a lot of attention and watch what button you're pressing. All jackpots that I've hit were all random so far; none were intentional.

I never knew that Voltorb Flip existed in HeartGold and SoulSilver, to be honest. If I did, I definitely would have given it a try. I traded my copies in a while ago, so now, I suppose it's too late, unfortunately.

  • I found D/P/Pt's Game Corner the most reliable way of gathering coins with the slots. I didn't have much luck with the ones from R/S/E/FR/LG. I did enjoy R/S/E's roulette, though.

  • I never really cared to do most of the Game Corner games. While Voltorb Flip could get annoying at times, it had the potential to be awesome if you're patient, because you could get solid Pokémon and TMs before you even fight Whitney. I've used it to do that before.

  • When it comes to favorite Game Corners in Pokemon games, these ones are my favorites:
    R/B/Y Game Corner
    G/S/C Game Corner
    R/S/E Game Corner
    FR/LG Game Corner
    D/P/Pt Game Corner

    Least Favorite Game Corner:
    HG/SS Game Corner

When it comes to why every Game Corner before the Game Corner in HG/SS are my favorites is because I like the slots. I am very good at them. As for why the Game Corner in HG/SS is my least favorite is because I felt that Voltorb Flip corrupted the Game Corner. Plus it reminded me of another game that I am not good at, Minesweeper.

  • I hated all Game Corners... ever.
They were the only way to get certain really good TMs, and they took FOREVER, to get, lest you bought the coins yourself.

  • The only Game Corner I really hated was the one in HG/SS, and that's because I suck badly at Voltorb Flip plus you can't even buy coins, meaning you have to be good at the game to even get a good chance at winning a decent number of them.

But I don't mind the absence of the Game Corner in later generations, given the *cough* European anti-gambling laws *cough* but I'm never a person who likes to gamble anyway. At least the prizes in some of them were interesting though.

  • To be honest, I actually like the Game Corner alot, especially the Game Corner from R/S/E. Once, I put in new batteries for my Gameboy Advance, and within 14 hours, I had to get new ones because I played the Game Corner non-stop. Those were good times.

I only played back in gsc. I used to love playing the slots in Goldenrod. For some reason I phased out of it in rse though I remember playing the slots once in a while. Anything after that probably didn't use it once.

Wow, that must have taken a lot of dedication! I don't think I've ever spent this much time on any Game Corner before, haha. Longest amount of hours I probably wound up playing would have to be somewhere around three or four. They're fun, but in my opinion, could get a little repetitive after a while. Well, maybe not all--most.

It did xD. I wanted to get all the TMs, and PokeDolls. After I got those, I wanted to start getting 999999 coins, but sadly only reached up around 950000 coins xD.

  • Tbh I really liked how you could get rare TMs as rewards and even Pokemon, it switched things up a bit from the standard, go here to get this item or catch this Pokemon etc, even if it was a massive grind! I always forget I can't play in the Game Corner when I'm replaying Platinum, as they removed the games in the European version of the game, I can see why though they were glorifying gambling for little kids for years lmao.

  • i genuinely miss the game corner. i'm probably one of the few people that don't even like voltorb flip. i'm just not into the minesweeper-esque type of games. just give me my pretend slots so i can hit my 7's and cash out, tbh.

Nah, I didn't like it either. I found it really upsetting whenever I lost all my coins. I never beat the game, either, so that helps my frustration.

I would usually try the slots for one of the 4,000 coin TM's but get bored quickly. Then return towards the end when I'm loaded with money and purchase coins until I get the ones I want.

  • As much as I loved the change of pace that was the Roulette they introduced in Gen 3, I still think all the actual gambling mini-games weren't as fun as Voltorb Flip. Maybe it's because I enjoy strategy puzzles like that, but I definitely made more coins in HG/SS than I did in any other game corner before that.

And I still think they're missing out on a real opportunity to revamp the game corners of the past into arcades. You can still buy coins, but now you play different arcade themed mini-games to earn tickets towards prizes. Takes out the gambling aspect, but still more or less the same concept.

I never bothered with the gambling aspect and only bought the coins. I never saw the point of this mechanic in most of the games that had game corners. They were just there to hide stuff behind a tedious mechanic and a lot of it could even be gotten easier later on. Making people work to get stuff early on is fun and all, but maybe use something that's challenging and not just purely luck based. I guess Voltorb flip comes closest to that since there's no real loss in terms of coins but even that I found just tedious.

Only exception for a game corner I give is the one in gen 1 because it also serves the purpose of providing some more lore to the world. It just perfectly fits for the local mafia whose only intend is to make profit to run a shady game corner with rigged slots while also luring people in with an ellusive one in a kind kinda deal Pokemon (Porygon) that they also happened to have taken from a company that they just recently took over.
