    It can be someone you've known in real life, or it can be online.

    I'm usually not good at keeping friends, it's especially hard when having to move several different times. but there was someone I had been talking to online since I was 9 years old. Only recently did we stop communicating. I'm assuming he passed away, due to his age, and all of his accounts suddenly going inactive. Also, his later messages started vaguely hinted towards it.

    It didn't make me too upset. Getting to know him, he lived meaningfully. Although I still message occasionally hoping he'll somehow come back online.
     
    Probably one that I originally had online.

    My friendships from elementary school died at high school. My friendships from high school died at the end of high school.

    My friendships online continued throughout high school, and the years after. I met them multiple times and we see each other as often as we can in person.

    Known one guy since second grade, and I've had online friends I'm still friends with, 1, for about 5 years now, and another nearly 13.
     
    24 years. Kindegarten pals, we're still officially bffs and talk even though we don't meet super often :)
     
    With online friends, there's one I knew since 2006 and another, bobandbill actually, I think around 2008. Both I knew through fanfiction and I've still talked with them since.

    With my real life friends, there are several from elementary school that I talked on and off. Like, some of us got separated from middle school but then reunited from high school, then we got separated during college, then we reunited through Facebook (sadly we haven't done like a reunion because all of us are around the globe lol).

    about 15 years with my childhood friend. we stopped talking a few years back now after secondary school ended when we just drifted and eventually stopped talking altogether.
     
    I still have two friends whom I know since elementary school (1st grade), and we still keep in touch on facebook. We are thinking of reuniting soon when I visit California next month.

    Online-wise, I'm looking at you Zach.
     
    IRL I have a friend I've semi kept in contact with for over 11 years now. Been friends since the 1st day of Kindergarten!

    Online - the longest I've known someone is almost 6 years! Most of them used to go on PC but we always talk, have each other added on social media, play video games, call each other etc. We're very updated with each other's lives and I'm super happy to still have a close friend group. The person I've known longest here who's still active would be Chase, we registered a few days apart from each other and met on the server.
     
    I have this one friend since kindergarten. We kinda stopped meeting each other while we're on the high schools (we're on the different ones), but when I started attending university, I met him on the very 1st lecture and found out he has same major as I do.
    After him, there is another friend I knew since elementary school, we even attended same high school and university.

    And then, my best friend. I met him in the high school, so it'll be about 6 years since I know him. He's currently at the other side of the country, but plan on moving back next year.

    Online? I don't know. I wasn't in contact with anyone 'til I became mod here, so not even a year.
     
    I still keep in touch with my best friend from when I was in grade 4. I moved away in grade 7 and we visited back and forth until the end of high school, but I haven't seen her since. We were always really into the internet, though, so when I moved, we kept in touch fairly constantly online. We still follow each other on social media and like each other's posts/statuses. :) I guess that friendship has gone on about 20 years now!

    For online friendships, there's a similar case--someone I met on a Pokemon forum when were were around 13 has migrated to similar fandoms and we've sort of kept in touch in that sense for years and years. So she's probably my longest online friend.

    But for both of those I'd say now they're more acquaintances than necessarily sustained friendships since we don't make a lot of mutual effort to keep up, it's more passive. I guess my high school friends count as people I've made an effort to stay friends with. It's been about 14 years since I met them and we have a discord chat and everything to talk regularly despite distances and the nearby ones I meet up with for drinks a few times a month.
     
    I moved around a lot when I was younger, so I fell out of touch with a lot of people over the years. I was lucky enough to work with one of my friends from middle school up until 2 years ago when I transferred to a different store, and I've only seen her two or three times since then, since she doesn't work there any more.

    As for online, there was an old forum that I signed up for back in 2005, and I know some of the people I used to talk to back then are still around, so I could always hit them up to say hi one day.
