How do you choose which version you're getting?

since there's always gonna be 2 versions of a Pokemon game coming out each new generation (with either 3rd ones or sequels coming out a lil bit later), i'm curious with as to what factors come into play when it comes to y'all choosing which one you're gonna get. of course this only applies to those who actually choose, instead of going for a power move and getting both lol.

Usually selects based on the box art legendary. Deviated this generation for Sirfetch'd. Why?

Sent out Pokemon for Marriland's Wonder Trade-based challenges. Bred and trained them to be superstars of the run. Included Pokemon like Escavalier, Drought Ninetales, and Snorlax.

Slipped in some fun choices too. Loved the thought of seeing undervalued Pokemon shine, like Hitmonchan, Musharna, and Yanmega. Led to feeling bad for Pokemon like Farfetch'd. Had nice tools in Generation 7 (Defiant, Stick/Leek held item, Leaf Blade, Night Slash, and First Impression), but terrible stats. Had to sign up for Farfetch'd's big break.

Usually just depends on which legendary I like more, never really pay attention to which Wild Pokémon is unique to which version

The differences between the games usually are pretty much just version exclusive Pokemon (both legendary and non-legendary), so that mainly what's going to drive most people's decisions on this.

Would kinda like to see the pairs have more substantial differences than what we've gotten. There's a literal few examples of this (having a different antagonist team in the Hoenn games, day and night being flipped in Moon/Ultra Moon), but I want more than that, and for it to be consistently done too.

edit: though there may or may not be potential issues with having substantially different versions and maybe they should just ditch the two version model (not that they ever will)

When I was a kid it was based on which one my mom bought. Then I started choosing the one based on the Box legendary, and recently its what I find that's on sale.

looking at most of the replies, yeah i should've expected that a large majority would base it off of the box legendary. i'm also similar to a degree tbh.

i like how in BW and BW2 though, Opelucid City (and i think Lacunosa Town too? i can't remember at the top of my head) looked vastly different depending on which game you got, along with that Black Tower and White Treehollow thing going on. i pretty much always wanted to play White/White 2 because i preferred the feel of a more rural, traditional landscape for towns and cities.

I usually choose based on version exclusive Pokémon. I don't care about legendary Pokémon, so it all comes down to regular version exclusive Pokémon. And mostly to new version exclusive Pokémon like Oranguru and Passimian in Alola games.

Surprisingly enough, I never thought about taking different locations or other gimmicks like daytime into account. But I'm not sure if I would choose different version based on that.

whichever pokemon on the box looks better tbh. i always end up with both anyway, but if i can't buy them both on release day, i always pick whichever looks better to me. if i think they're both ugly or really like both, then my next thing i resort to is the version exclusives.

Like most everyone else has said, I choose based on my preference for the box art legendaries :)

Depends on w/e my sibling gets. We tend to buy one of each version, so we can swap and trade that way. Also less arguments, if we have what we wish, but we tend to like the opposite versions we chose anyway.

Also, depends on which Pokémon is available for specific version. If there's one on a version that we want, but there's another on the same one we also wish for, then we trade the Pokémon. Not sure if that makes sense or not.

    box art legend for me~

in the case of HGSS, the actual design of the boxart actually played into my decision, as well! the boxart for HeartGold for me is better than the SoulSilver one in my eyes. :x

I definitely start with the legendary on the box, from there if I'm really interested I may head over to serebii, to get an idea of who's in what.
For example when black and white came out, I knew I wanted zekrom, but then I was conflicted because I also wanted a gothorita and its evolved form, but of course that was a version exclusive only in the other game.

oh wait, weren't version exclusives pretty much non-existent in Gen 5 because of the shaking grass mechanic? i thought you could get a Gothita/Gothorita still in the opposite game, but just with a 5% chance?

possibly? if so I never knew about it, never saw one either.

Usually it's how cool the box art/legendary looks. I don't really care for version exclusives much anymore since they can be traded for so easily with WiFi. Honestly, I'm super open to getting any version nowadays, it's hardly different. Only exception is HeartGold > SoulSilver because Ho-Oh and its remixed battle theme is absolute l o v e while I found Lugia's to be an ugly mess and one of my least favorite songs in the franchise.

I always want to see a list of version exclusives before picking a version. (Examples: Reuniclus and Braviary in White and White 2, and Ludicolo and Sableye in Alpha Sapphire)

However, if a version has an exclusive that I really like with a type similar to my starter of choice, I pick the other version. (Examples: Clauncher in X, and Turtonator in Sun)

My fiancé and I alternate which ones we want most. He wanted Soul Silver, so I got Heart Gold. I wanted White so he got Black. He wanted Y so I got X. And this system has continued ever since! :D
