Are you a fast or slow reader when it comes to text? Books and any other media both count. How is your comprehension?

As a story to go along with this thread, our local school system had no idea what they were doing. I was a prodigy reader in my earliest years of school. I wasn't happy anymore when I reached 6th grade so I quit doing my work. The staff was abusive and perverted, (with an arrest even being made). As protest, I quit doing my work and the school day consisted of me being quiet and sleeping. I was thrown in a special ed literature class.

They were friendly and I enjoyed our small group. I did my work and excelled. So they put me in a gifted literature class.

I quit doing my work again and my grade was almost a 0% in there. Again, they moved me into a 'normal' class. Never had a problem again.

During a college entrance exam I scored one point away from being able to skip introduction English. They offered a reattempt, and I declined.

I consume ridiculous amounts of written text every day. I'm often reading a few magazines and at least two books at the same time. In several languages. So I'd say my comprehension is pretty good. And considering I have read 90 books/comics this year so far, I'd say my speed is pretty good as well.

Average when reading aloud, fast when just reading.
If I read fast when saying it, I'll mix words.

Tad on the slower side I think, maybe average.
I don't read that fast nor do I want to as I prefer taking my time.

this is going to sound like bragging but.. for the longest while, i've always been praised for how fast i would read. not even just that, it's my reading ability in general, as well. whereas a vast majority of my classmates would read pretty much at grade level, i would be one of the few that stand out that would read several grade levels above, and they regularly tested for that.

it kinda saddens me upon reflecton, because after 12th grade AP literature, i just stopped reading novels altogether whereas prior to that i loved reading. after it became an obligation, i just didn't find the fun in it, anymore. i miss having the free time to actually read books and enjoy it these days.

Wow... I had no idea all these things happened to you. :( It seems like you're quite talented, but I'm so sorry you had to go through this. ;o;

I'm probably a faster reader. I haven't properly read things beyond online text for a while and it's been aaaaages since I actually finished a book... haha. Still, despite the lack of practice I read decently fast. Husband makes me feel slow at the rate he goes through things though lmao.

Embarrassing honesty time.

I have developmental issues that make my reading incredibly slow. People are always shocked at just how long it takes me to read things, even my friends and family. It's almost like they forget until they see it happening again.

It always took me forever to read a book - my partner would often finish a whole series before I got anywhere near completing the first part.

I haven't actually been able to read a book in a couple of years now though, due to ongoing brain issues. My processing speed is even worse than before, in fact it's pretty much nonexistent these days, and I just can't see that changing for the foreseeable future.

If a film has text on screen, then I have to pause it to read it. If that isn't possible, then someone else will usually read it out to me. Most of the time I ask someone to read menus etc for me too.

It's very frustrating, and I spent many years trying to "fix" myself. I eventually had to accept that I can't and it's just something I have to live with ;(

Guesses average reading speed. Lacks good comparison, however. Never asked or heard how long other people spent reading something. Keeps up with subtitles.

Grasped a basic understanding of texts. Sufficed for good grades throughout schooling. Glossed straight over most symbolism and secondary themes unless specifically looking for it.

Read books above grade level initially in elementary school. Picked up books from the Redwall, Star Wars, and Dungeons and Dragons series. Held steady around that level. Treats more advanced literature with a similar lens while reading.

Depends on how engaged I am. For stuff like manga, I read pretty fast. For prose I'm generally interested in, I slow down my pace to pay attention. For posts on a forum, I also read fast I will admit, though, anime subtitles are occasionally too fast for me, and I have to read them more than once.

I hated that school from the moment I stepped foot inside it. As children we don't have a choice over this stuff. According to online reviews, it's still not a good place. For me, I got out unscathed, although my 7th grade history teacher was arrested for pedophila. Another teacher was notorius for 'dropping things' and looking under skirts.

Whenever I post something negative I always try thinking of a positive. I can't this time. There was extreme bullying, but it never happened to me. I kept myself quiet.

I've always loved reading so I used to read a lot of books in my spare time. I remember my parents also sent me to tutoring from the ages of 7-12 in a number of subjects including English, which was designed to help students get an academic head start so I could pass academic/scholarship exams for HS. Part of English tutoring was practicing for comprehension tests, I must have read hundreds of passages for homework. Practicing so much helped a lot in terms of learning how to skim read and understand what I was reading. I liked reading and had no issues with the standardised tests for it.

High school English was OK until it started transitioning into being essay-based. I was never able to quite grasp the deeper themes/analysis of the books that were expected from my school for English. I do love reading though and I read often so I've become used to skim reading. That said, I am hopeless at talking about what I read in depth so perhaps I don't understand as much as I'd like. At university, I am able to understand what I'm required to read and I've been getting a lot faster with skimming through academic papers to get the main points for assignments which is nice. :D

I've always been a fast reader and my comprehension has also always been good. These days not quite as much as when I back in school though. Unfortunately, I have a tendency to also read fast out loud which means people listening just hear ojmrtgorkepwdqkfig unless I make myself slow down.
