I'm watching HBO's Chernobyl mini-series! Got the 4 current episodes done yesterday and today and ready for the next one this Monday! This is easily my favorite non-comedy show. It's managed to get a higher user rating than GoT with more votes too!
Sitting down and watching Neil Gaiman's 'Good Omens' as we speak. The book was amazing and I LOVE Neil Gaiman's work so my expectations are pretty high!
The Starz series the White Princess. It's based on the life of Elizabeth of York, mother of King Henry VIII, and is a sequeal to the White Queen, which is a fictionalized account of the life of her mother Elizabeth Woodville. The White Queen is adapted from the first book in Gregory's Cousins War series of the same title. The White Princess is based on the 5th book in the series.
After falling in love with The White Queen tv show I was deeply disappointed by The White Princess. I'd give "Queen" 4 or 5 stars and Princess no more than 1 star. Below is a review of sorts, it doesn't actually contain spoilers. I just hid it for being a long rant.
Spoiler:
I'll start by saying that I thought the White Queen had a great cast. Sure, its more fantasy romance than history with witchcraft, changelings and secret marriages, but that's fine with me-- this is Phillippa Gregory, what did you expect? As a drama I thought the White Queen series was well-paced with lots of really sympathetic and colorful characters on both sides of the war, pitch perfect acting and very faithful to the White Queen book, combining elements from the Red Queen and the Kingmaker's Daughter for a large-scoped story with shifting perspectives between Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville. A few modern haircuts, but nothing as glaring as Reign.
The White Princess by contrast is very slow, and the main character Lizzie comes across surprisingly unlikeable, which is not what I expected based on the direction The White Queen was going.
Now I have not read this particular novel The White Princess by Phillippa Gregory, so this could be the way the book was written too. I will note however that my mom (who watched the tv show with me did read the books The White Princess and The King's Curse that the miniseries is based on) said they made a lot of changes, and the personality of Lizzie is one of them. I am not in a position yet to compare the two, but judging the White Princess for it's entertainment value alone I found it boring and the production values really cheap.
Since many of the prominent characters characters from The White Queen are still in The White Princess like Lizzie, Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort, Henry Tudor, Jasper Tudor and Thomas Stanley I thought it was not necessary to hire an almost entirely differently cast for the reoccuring characters, especially since there were already going to be a lot of new faces and new characters. Not everybody was dead at the end of the story, and there were a lot of good actors who could have stayed on board. I think it hurt the sense of story continuity to make so many changes since the White Princess takes place just a day or two after the events of the White Queen. I also don't think they were able to recreate the chemistry that the previous actors had with eachother in The White Queen. This isn't to say that none of the actors replacing majors characters were good, in fact some of them are very good like the new Jasper and Margaret Beaufort. They acted the bad plot they were stuck with as best they could. I just don't think the cast overall fits together as well as they did previously. For instance you really need Thomas Stanley's cynical wit and devilish charisma as a foil to his nervous religious fanatic wife, the odd couple of the series. The new who plays Stanley looks like a capable character actor, but his Stanley doesn't seem very much like the schemer we met in The White Queen, not that he has many scenes to work with.
Of all the actors from The White Queen who did not return I was the most heartbroken by Rebecca Ferguson leaving as Elizabeth Woodville, I thought she did a stunning job as the lead, and think Essie Davis was just horrible as her replacement. Mostly everyone else at least does an average job, but Davis doesn't carry the gravity of situation or her character's intense temperament. She seems more Jacquetta Woodville than Elizabeth.
A lot of brand new characters not previously explored in the White Queen like Bishop Morton, the De la Pole family and Thomas Stanley's brother William hop aboard for The White Princess, but most of these people don't feel fully developed. This is a real shame because their historical counterparts are interesting and there were a lot of good new actors in the supporting cast that just never got the scenes to sink their teeth into. They are are hardly in the story. Margaret of Burgandy is one developing character that we get to at least spend some time with, but I think she is both written and played over-the-top. The only character fresh on the scene that I think The White Princess nailed is Margaret Pole of Salisbury, who is played well by the young actress.
Though there are overall some decent actors scattered throughout the cast, I can't go higher than 1 star because of the writing and wish I had never watched this. After loving The White Queen and rewatching it over the years The White Princess will make it hard to revisit the Queen because I won't be able to stop picturing the lame way the plotlines come to an end now. /points a wand at myself/ OBLIVIATE!
Recently started on the current season of Elementary! Some spoilers under:
Spoiler:
I enjoyed the first three episodes! There was a bit of cliffhanger in second episode where while the person that had shot Gregson was caught, they left a few plot threads loose. Hopefully the stuff that went down in second episode will tie together. The third episode had some good moments, now if only John Noble (who played Sherlock's dad in previous seasons) would make another appearance since he's been referenced quite a few times in that episode haha.
I've also watched the first two episodes of Tuca and Bertie. It's an adult cartoon show of the friendship between two female birds. The humor can be a hit or miss, but I liked what they were going for in the 2nd episode where the topic was sexual harassment in the workplace. I'm interested in watching more of the episodes!

Have you seen the companion documentary series "The Real White Queen and Her Rivals"? If not I fully recommend that, never bothered with the mini series and just watched the documentary instead. Half narrated with the presenter and half acted out which is my personal favourite style of history documentary.
Also if you like that period in history and have an interest of the Wars of the Roses in general I also recommend a 4 part documentary series available on youtube called 'Britain's Bloody Crown'.
I'm personally much more #TeamMargaret than I am Elizabeth haha.

No, I haven't but I really appreciate the recommendation. I am going to check out both The Real White Queen and Her Rivals as well as Britain's Bloody Crown, because these are two War of the Roses docs that I don't think I have seen yet. Thanks again!
A Yorkist and a Lancastrian can still get along and learn from eachother. Is #TeamMargaret the symbol of your allegiance to Margaret Beaufort or Margaret of Anjou? :)
I'm up to ep 4 or 5 I believe. It's a decent enough show especially if you want some background noise.
The plot is interesting but it does feel a bit sloppy and could be better.
The three lead actors are all really good at their roles and their characters do seem realistic teenagers.
