What did you want to be as a kid?

    "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a question commonly asked to young kids. Many of us probably were asked this at some point, be it in schools or by family/friends.

    Do you remember what you wanted to be as a kid? Was it what you are currently doing or planning on doing? I said I wanted to be a writer when I was around 7-8 according to my mom. Although I haven't published anything, I've written fanfiction, so I suppose I did achieve my goal to a minor extent..? :')

    Architect, because I loved to draw. Turns out, it's way more than just that lmao.

    In my early teens I then wanted to be a Pokemon YouTuber, but then I realized just how unfun playing games are if I have to keep recording myself and faking reactions.
     
    When I was a kid I wanted to be a paleontologist. Which wasn't exactly all that uncommon, dinosaurs are some of the coolest shit to kids, or at least that was the case back in my day.

    But my interest in that faded by late high school, and for my whole adult life I've never had any idea on what kind of profession I'd really like to have.

    Was it because of Jurassic Park? I remember when that was a new franchise and I really wanted to be one after watching the first two. Then there was being an archeologist after watching Indiana Jones.

    When I went to secondary school, I had no idea what I wanted to do and that was even the case when I went to law school.
     
    I wanted to be a clinical psychologist from the age of 10. I wish I had a more pleasant reason for wanting to be a clinical psychologist but I struggled so much when I was younger with mental illness and I realised how important it was to have support. I hoped to at least make a little bit of a difference to someone else's life in being there for them.

    I didn't end up being a clinical psychologist. Whilst it sounded nice in theory I just don't think in reality I would be able to do it as a long-term career. My main concern would be burning out. I also just feel like certain topics I'm just not ready to work with since they hit a bit too close to home and I don't want that to affect the help I give a client. I respect clinical psychologists so much but in the end it wasn't the career for me.

    Right now I'm studying to be a qualified lawyer. It's a lot different from where I thought I'd be but I like it so far. I always wanted a career where I could be of help to clients and I liked studying law the moment I got exposed to it through high school classes. I hope to be able to use my knowledge of the law to help people though I'm not sure what area I want to go into yet. I got imposter syndrome in my first year of university though and told myself I'd never be able to pass law school because it was too hard. But I really was not liking my degree at the time so I made the decision to change it to a double degree and take the chance with law. It's difficult but haven't regretted it so far. :D
     
    I definitely recall wanting to be a veterinarian when I was growing up. I loved animals and wanted to care for them. However, I've became much more sensitive over the years and I feel I cannot handle it due to my anxiety.

    And then there was artist but I've heard horror stories of starving artist but thankfully I'm taking a trade which my skills will benefit from it rn. My program luckily has multiple options for careers so as long as I'm open for those jobs I should be fine. Even if my job isn't in the art field, I can always do it as a side job/hobby.

    Nah it wasn't that, I never saw any of the movies until much later
     
    I wanted to be a journalist. So I did.

    Side options were prime minister or teacher, and I haven't given up on those yet.
     
    When I was a young kid I wanted to be a ballerina. I am not flexible and I did take some ballet classes just for the fun.
     
    I think during middle school I wanted to be an astronaut because I was fascinated by the idea of zero gravity. Another point I wanted to be a photographer. I never really had a clear idea of what I wanted to be (and still don't tbh) but these were pretty much the only specific answers I had to that question.
     
    I wanted to be a Power Ranger.
     
    Marine biologist. Was constantly told I'm too stupid.

    Late but, if I ever manage to patent something or need legal help with inventions, guess I know who to ask for help :3c

    As for me... I don't really have a clear memory of what job I wanted to get because, especially when I was... younger than 10, I used to change my answer all the time! But I remember wanting to be an IT engineer and programmer in middle school (and let's player on the side hehe). That's definitely something I was really into, to the point I almost signed up to a school that would help me do just that! But over time, I found myself doubting on that career choice more and more and only now that I'm going through university I'm getting a better idea of what I want to be. Basically, studying was my way of buying time and narrowing the options down gradually :)
     
    All my life, I've wanted to work with animals in some form! As a child it was my dream to be the next Steve Irwin. :') Then that evolved to being a "space botanist" and growing plants up in space, I thought that'd be awesome! Buuut as I grew older I realised that sort of career is a little too ambitious for me because maths my focus in life is having a big, happy family, not on a career!

    Now I'm studying to become a psychologist, specialising in child psychology. It's practical, it pays well, it's in high demand, and it's accessible to me with hard work and a Master's degree or two... but is it my passion? I can't stay that it is. Still, I'm pretty content with it! Helping children is very meaningful to me. Plus, it'll be extremely helpful in my personal life when I have kids of my own!

    Yet I still yearn to work with animals. Had I access to a university (within reach of campus) that ran Animal Behaviour courses, I'd most certainly be doing that instead! Maybe when my future kids are all grown up, I'll study that to occupy my time and realise that dream! :)
     
    I wanted to be a veterinarian. I love and i have always loved animals. I do remember that when I was a child I used to get many many presents about animals, from toys to books lol. However, when we got a dog and we brought her to the veterinarian, I saw what being a veterinarian really is. It's actually hard because in some way, to treat animals, u also make them suffer and I couldn't stand that. The part of the job that is rewarding is knowing that you saved an animal, but tbh i am too sensitive for that job. Anyway, since that episode i kinda had a crisis, because I needed to find an alternative to that. Growing up I have tried many things and still now, I am very interested and intrigued by many of those. After high school, i entered the computer engineering degree, but I left after one year because I was just going crazy, wasting time and studying for something that I didn't like. My mom kinda always told me that it wasn't the right choice for me. She actually wanted me to study marine biology, because I have always had a very important bond with water and because I have quite a good knowledge about animals. However, despite being interesting, it's very hard to find a job and there are several things in the biology degree that I wouldn't enjoy studying. So, I switched to psychology, that is a very very interesting field and i am enjoying it way more. There are some topics that have my attention, but in general I think I am more interested in clinical psychology.
